Joseph Mudry, Former Sitkan, Dies in Oregon

Joseph Mudry

Joseph Mudry passed away, surrounded by family, in his Portland, Oregon, home on June 9.

He valiantly fought a 3½ month battle to heal after suffering an aortic aneurysm on Feb. 26. Sadly, during this time he was isolated from his family due to COVID-19. Unfortunately, recovery proved impossible and he made the difficult decision to come home to live his final days, with his loved ones at his side.

Joe was born on Jan. 10, 1949, in San Pedro, California, the youngest of four children of Dr. Joseph and Lillian Mudry. He attended Indio High School and there he met Linda Snedaker.  They were married Feb. 16, 1968, and had two children, Joseph and Stacy.

During his life Joe owned many businesses, including a gas station, a drywall contracting company and an RV repair company.

In 1995, Joe and Linda semi-retired and followed their son to Sitka, where Joe first worked at True Value Sitka and then for the State of Alaska at Mt, Edgecumbe High School. He and Linda fully retired last year and moved to Portland.

When asked what his hobbies were, “Pops” (as he was affectionately called by his family) would answer, “Fish and drink beer.”  Joe had a good sense of humor and was always quick with a joke, a witty comment or words to make one feel at ease.  He would always answer a call to help with whatever was needed, from repairs of any kind, life advice, being a willing fishing partner, to being the best man at his son’s wedding.

Joe was a dedicated father, grandfather, brother, uncle and husband. He was a friend to many and his kind heart, infectious laugh, witty demeanor and goofy smile will be truly missed by all.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Linda Mudry; and his children, Stacy Mudry (Darryl Howard) and Joseph Mudry (SueAnn).

Also surviving are his grandchildren, Bryant Mudry-Howard, Hayden Mudry-Howard, Elizabeth Howard, Joey Mudry (Hannah), Sophie Romine (Devan), Gabriel Sexton, Samantha McBryde (Connor) and Shiloh Sexton; and his great-grandchildren, Jacen Mudry and Virginia McBryde.

His sisters are Joann Grillo, Betty Kurisu (Vern) and Catherine Campbell. He also is survived by many loved nieces and nephews.

His family expressed a heartfelt “Thank You for the wonderful notes, cards, prayers, well wishes, and gift baskets.  We sincerely appreciate all your love and support.”
