Cancer Support
    Group to Meet
    Sitka Cancer Support Group will meet 1 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Brave Heart Volunteer/Manager’s Building of the Pioneers Home located behind the Mt. Edgecumbe preschool on Seward Street.
    Those in cancer treatment and cancer survivors are invited to spend time with others who understand what they are going through.

    Blue Lake Tour
    Set for Aug. 21
    The City and Borough of Sitka will conduct a tour of the Blue Lake dam expansion project 9-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, for the Assembly members, administrator candidates and the public.
    The tour will begin at Centennial Hall with a short presentation, and continue on one bus to the project site and back.
    Those wanting to attend must sign up at www.mysignup.com/bluelaketour as seats are limited. Food and drink are permitted. Participants should dress appropriately for rough terrain and must wear closed-toe shoes.

    Art Classes Set
    For After School
    The Sitka Fine Arts Camp is once again offering fall after-school art classes for elementary and middle school students. Classes will be held at the Yaw Art Center, Allen Auditorium and the ceramics studio.
    Drawing and painting classes, guitar lessons, and Celtic Dance will be available to elementary-age students, while potters wheel (ceramics), guitar and digital music composition will be offered to middle school students.
    Students can catch school buses to the SJ Campus. The specific bus information will be available the week that school starts.
    Most SFAC after-chool classes start in early or mid-September, and run from six to eight weeks. A flyer will be sent home with students during the first week or so of school; however, parents and students can read about classes and sign up by visiting the online site at fineartscamp.org under the After School Art Program tab. The office is located in the Rasmuson Building or call 747-3085 to register, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

    Study, Meeting
    To Discuss Need
    For Boat Haulout
    A feasibility study is being initiated to determine if there is a need for a second marine haulout for larger vessels and a new commercial moorage facility to be located at the Sawmill Cover Industrial Park.
    Public comment is being sought to answer the following questions: What marine industry support services are needed; and how can Sitka provide the services needed by vessel owners to keep more money circulating in our local economy?
    The meeting is set 6 p.m. Aug. 26 in the Centennial Hall auditorium.

    Call Given for
    Play Auditions
    The Greater Sitka Arts Council announces auditions for the melodrama ‘‘Paris of the Pacific’’ 7-9 p.m. Aug. 22-23 at the Pioneers Home Chapel.
    The melodrama is about the 1867 exchange and will be done in a “reader’s theater” format. Ira Snelling is directing and Jeff Budd will produce.
    At least 10 parts – and up to 14 to 16 – are available. At least four women and six men are needed. The play will premiere Oct. 19 as part of the Alaska Day celebration.
    A minimum of 10 rehearsals start in mid-September and will occur at least twice a week. Those with questions may call Jeff at 747-4821.

    Exercise Class
    At Senior Center
    Strong and Steady, an ongoing, free exercise class for seniors, will meet 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Swan Lake Senior Center.

    Brittle Bones
    Fundraiser Set
    The National Blue Jeans for Better Bones is Aug. 23.
    Organizers said to wear a sticker ($1) or wristband ($3) and a favorite pair of jeans while raising awareness about brittle bones. Donations of any amount are accepted.
    The Sitka fundraiser is being held in memory of Sean Garrison, Sitka High School class of 1991, for the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation.
