    Cancer Support
    Group to Meet
    Sitka Cancer Support Group will meet 1 p.m. Jan. 19 at Brave Heart Volunteers in the Sitka Pioneers Home Manager’s House, located behind the Mt. Edgecumbe Preschool on Seward Street.
    Those in cancer treatment and cancer survivors are invited to come and spend some time with others who understand what they are going through. This support group is sponsored by Sitka Cancer Survivors Society.     Action Figures
    The Sheldon Jackson Museum invites the public to a free family-friendly At Saxan third Saturday program to make action figures 1 p.m. Jan. 18.
    Individuals will learn about traditional Inupiaq and St. Lawrence Island Yupik clothing, including parkas and kuspuks/qiipaghaq, gloves, waterproof garments and snowshoes.
    This is the first of a two-part program. The second program will involve making sleds to go with the action figures.

    Panel Meets Tonight
    The Sitka Marine Mammal Commission will meet 6:30 p.m. tonight in the Resource Protection Department offices, 429 Katlian St.

    Grief Group has
    Schedule Change
    Brave Heart Volunteers’ Living with Loss adult grief support group has changed its schedule.
    The group will meet on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month,   6-7:30 p.m., at the Pioneers Home Manager’s House.

    On Dean’s List
    Sitka High School graduate Mikalai Potrzuski has been named to the Central Methodist University Dean’s List for the fall 2013 semester.
    To qualify, one must be a full-time student and achieve a 3.5 or higher grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
    Mikalai is the son of Carol and Robert Potrzuski of Sitka.


    Reception for
    Oral History
    Project Jan. 25
    A reception for the Sheldon Jackson School and College Oral History Project is set 3-5 p.m. Jan. 25 at Allen Hall on the Sheldon Jackson Campus.
    The project aims to document the history of the school through oral history interviews with former students, staff and others.
    The reception is to present the ongoing project, as well as a short video and written history based on the interviews done so far. Coffee and cookies will be served.
    ‘‘We will also have historic photos, and we are looking for help in identifying the individuals pictured,’’ said organizer Rebecca Poulson.
    This portion of the project is sponsored by Alaska Arts Southeast with support from the Alaska Humanities Forum and the National Endowment for the Humanities.     Injury Prevention
    Training Offered
    AMSEA will hold a pre-season workshop for commercial fishermen titled “Strains, Sprains and Pains: Ergonomic Injury Prevention for Commercial Fishermen” 10 a.m.-noon Feb. 1 at Centennial Hall.
    Participants will learn how to avoid musculoskeletal problems common in commercial fishing and share ideas on ergonomic changes that fishermen have made on their vessels. Participants should take a mat if they want to practice exercises to “tune up” before, during and after the season.
    The workshop is free to commercial fishermen. To register contact AMSEA at 747-3287.

TAP Class Set
A Training for Alcohol Professions class will be held 9 a.m. Jan. 18 at Westmark Sitka in the banquet room.
The class fulfills the State of Alaska education requirements for servers and sellers of beverage alcohol. Cost is $45 and ID cards required.
Those who have an expired TAM card less than 6 months expired may simply take the test. Cost is $45 and individuals must arrive by 8:30 a.m.

    School Board,
    STA to Meet
    The Sitka School Board will hold a work session with Sitka Tribe of Alaska 6 p.m. Jan. 21 at Centennial Hall. The work session is open to the public.
    Following the meeting the board will meet in executive session to discuss the superintendent evaluation.

    Work Parties Set
    At SJ Campus
    Volunteer work parties are restarting on the SJ Campus, focusing on finishing up Allen Hall.
    Participants are asked to meet at the hall at 9 a.m. A break for a hot lunch is at noon. Work continues until 3 p.m.  Volunteers on Jan. 18 will be staining trim. All are welcome to join at any time. Call Sitka Fine Arts Camp office at 747-3085 with questions.

    Herring Panel Meets
    The Sitka Herring Festival will hold an organizational meeting 6:30 p.m. Jan. 21 at 429 Katlian. Questions can be directed to Jessica Gill at 747-7168.




    Tender-Hearted
    Book Club Meets
    The Tender-Hearted Book Club will meet 6:30 p.m. Jan. 23 at Kettleson Memorial Library.
    Those who have read a tender-hearted book or want to hear others talk about their favorite tender-hearted book are welcome to attend.
    Anyone can be a member. Tea, treats and talk will be shared during the evening.

    Grand Igloo
    Leader in Sitka
    Newly elected Pioneers of Alaska Grand Igloo President Troxell Hebert of Delta will be in Sitka Jan. 22 to install newly elected officers of Sitka Pioneers of Alaska.
    The ritual will be conducted at Sitka Methodist Church following a social hour at 5:30 p.m. and potluck dinner at 6 p.m. The installation of officers will be the only business conducted. All members are being encouraged to assist with the installation ritual.

    UAS to Offer
    Geography
    Harvey H. Brandt of the UAS Sitka Campus will teach an introductory geography class spring semester this year.
    Brandt will help students see that the study of geography is the observation of land and people: how they live, and how the place they live affects their choices and opportunities.  
    The class will meet  4-6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Jan. 21 on campus.
    It’s for students of all ages including high school or home school dual enrollment participants, traditional college students, and working adults or seniors who want to know more about the world we live in.
    An optional feature class will be a  trip to Anchorage to observe and study the Mat-Su valley, Kenai Peninsula, and the ceremonial start of the Iditarod dog sled race on March 1. Then the group will travel to Willow for the actual start of the race March 2. Students will need to provide the round trip airplane ticket to Anchorage if they wish to participate in the field trip.
    The cost of the introduction to geography class is $528 for three credits, plus optional airfare to Anchorage.
