‘Hearts’ Topic of
    Discovery Days
    Sitka Sound Science Center’s Discovery Days will investigate real hearts 10 a.m.-noon Feb. 15.
    Participants will touch and explore  hearts. Discovery Days are free to SSSC annual pass holders, but passes are available at the door.

    Bake Sale Set
    Sitka Kaagwaantaan will hold a Valentine’s Day bake sale 2-6 p.m. Feb. 14 at Wells Fargo Bank.

    In Session
    Pacific High School will hold school on Friday, Feb. 21, which will be an inservice day for the rest of school district.

    Park Announces
    Local T-Shirt
    Design Contest
    Sitka National Historical Park, in conjunction with Alaska Geographic, is inviting local artists to submit designs for a Sitka National Historical Park T-Shirt.
    Designs should be representative of the park, its resources or activities and may include but are not limited to Northwest Coast formline or totemic art, the Battle of 1804, Russian America, or the artist’s relationship with the park, a press release said. 
    The design must be suitable for T-shirt transfer and is limited to three colors. A panel of judges comprised of representatives from both Sitka National Historical Park and Alaska Geographic will select the winning entry. A $400 honorarium will be awarded for the selected design.
    Designs and artist contact information – including telephone and email address – can be dropped off at the visitor center or may be sent to Sitka National Historical Park, Attn: 2014 T-Shirt, 103 Monastery St., Sitka, AK 99835.
    Designs must be received by March 6 to be considered and the winner will be notified by March 11, 2014. Artists should not send their original work.

    Cancer Support
    Group to Meet
    Sitka Cancer Support Group will meet 1 p.m. Feb. 16 at the Brave Heart Volunteers in the Pioneers Home Manager’s House.
    Those in cancer treatment and cancer survivors are invited to spend time with others who understand what they are going through. The support group is sponsored by Sitka Cancer Survivors Society.     ‘Bear’ Book to
    Raise Funds for
    Fortress of Bear
Local author Debi Terry has written a book to help raise funds for the Fortress of the Bear.
‘‘You’re Keeping Bears Where? The Fortress of the Bear: A Volunteer’s Experience’’ is on sale at Old Harbor Books, Amazon and All proceeds benefit the Fortress of the Bear.
Terry’s book documents each of the bears and their individual personalities, and includes many photos. She has also included a story and photos about owner Les Kinnear and the volunteers.
Terry, a mental health professional, has been a volunteer at the Fortress of the Bear for five years.
‘‘Volunteering at the Fortress is my therapy,’’ she said.

    PFD Help Given
    Marie Murray will be at Kettleson Memorial Library 10:30-noon Feb. 15 to help Sitkans file their Permanent Fund Dividend checks online.
    She will also answer questions and assist patrons with general information about filing for PFDs.

    Reuse Center Open
    Sitka Community Development Corporation announces the Sitka Reuse Center will be open 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Feb. 15.
    The Reuse Center is a volunteer operation selling donated building materials. It’s located at 4620 Halibut Point Road, across from the AML barge landing. Those who are interested in volunteering or donating materials can call Greg Reynolds at 738-5518.

    Centennial Hall
    Design Discussed
    The project team for the Centennial Hall renewal project will host design focus group meetings all day Feb.  18 and 19.
    Focus groups meeting on Feb. 18 are: museum, 9 a.m.; landscape and site 2:30 p.m.; and conventions and conferences 6:30 p.m. On Feb. 19 the focus groups will include: interior design and display at 10 a.m. and meetings and assemblies at 1 p.m.
