Chamber Topic
Roger Schmidt, executive director of Alaska Arts Southeast, will present at the noon Wednesday Chamber of Commerce luncheon.
His topic will be the Sitka Fine Arts Camp and Sheldon Jackson Campus Revitalization and where it is at after three years.
The luncheon is open to the public.

Cancer Survivor’s
Society to Meet
Sitka Cancer Survivor’s Society will hold its annual meeting and no-host luncheon 1-3 p.m. March 9 at Westmark Sitka.
Memberships will be renewed. SCSS is supported by local contributions with all proceeds assisting local families.
The Sitka Cancer Survivors Society board of directors invites all interested members of the community to attend.
Board members are: Sarah Blue, president; Candi Barger, vice president; Deborah Lyons, treasurer; Bonnie Richards; Susan Suarez, event coordinator; Debbie Owen; and Mary Beth Palof, Sitka Cancer Support Group leader.

The U.S. Coast Guard Spouses’ and Women’s Association announces its annual Rainy Day Bazaar to be 10 a.m.-4 p.m. April 12 at Centennial Hall.

Author J. Torres
To Speak at Library
Author Joseph Torres, better known as J. Torres, an award-winning Filipino-born Canadian comic book writer, will present his work and words to readers 5:30 p.m. March 5 at Kettleson Memorial Library.
Torres, whose books include the Eisner Award nominated ‘‘Alison Dare,’’ the YALSA listed ‘‘Days Like This’’ and ‘‘Lola: A Ghost Story,’’ as well as ‘‘Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight,’’ ‘‘Love as a Foreign Language’’ and ‘‘Teen Titans Go,’’ which garnered him a Shuster Award. He has also done some writing for animation and television.
The public is invited. A potluck will follow the event at Centennial Hall.
His visit is possible due to the Alaska Spirit of Reading, a statewide book discussion program which this year is featuring the works Torres, a Canadian comic book writer and former ESL teacher.

‘Story Animation’
Set for Grades 5-8
Those in grades 5-8 are invited to tell a story through animation in a one-day workshop with Javier Barboza 11 a.m.-3 p.m. March 8 in the Blatchley Middle School art room.
Students will explore animation techniques and learn about design and filming. Attendees are to take a bag lunch and a USB flash/jump drive. All other materials are provided. To sign up, call the Sitka Fine Arts Camp at 747-3085.
‘America Saves’
Week Listed
America Saves Week is Feb. 24-March 1 and the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service is asking everyone to share what they are saving up for.
The designation is an annual opportunity for organizations to promote good savings behavior and a chance for individuals to assess their own saving status.
Savers can stop by Kettleson Memorial Library’s front desk and ‘‘take the pledge’’ to save.
AARP Driver
Safety Taught
AARP driver safety will be taught 9 a.m.-1 p.m. March 7 at the Sitka Fire Department.
Drivers should take their license and AARP membership card, and arrive 15 minutes before the class. For more information call Ted Allio at 747-5124.

Baby Boy Kelly
Cormac Gahl Kelly was born Feb. 7, 2014, at Sitka Community Hospital. At birth, the infant weighed 8 pounds, 11 ounces, and was 21 inches long.
Parents are Megan Gahl and Darrin Kelly of Sitka. The father is employed with the USDA Forest Service.
Cormac joins a brother, Finnan Kelly.
Managing Stress

Sitka Pioneers of Alaska men’s igloo 22 and women’s igloo 12 will meet March 6 at Sitka Methodist Church.
Social hour will commence at 5:30 p.m., with a potluck dinner at 6 p.m. and meeting to follow.
Items for discussion include the new website and convention. The program will include biographies of some founding members. All Pioneers are welcome and being encouraged to attend.
