The Sitka Historical Society and Sitka Maritime Heritage Society will present ‘‘Earthquake: Stories of Sitkans Who Experienced the Great Alaska Earthquake and Tsunami Around Alaska’’ March 27 at Centennial Hall.
On Good Friday, 1964, Prince William Sound was the epicenter of the largest earthquake ever recorded in North America. The March 27 event will mark the 50th anniversary.
It will start at 6:30 p.m. in the Maksoutoff Room with highlights of the film, “Between the Glacier and the Sea” about the destruction in Valdez. At 7 p.m. will be a short slide show overview of the quake followed by a panel of Sitkans who will tell stories of their experiences around the state, including what really happened here in Sitka. Audience members are invited to share their own experiences.

Deadline Near
For Artwise
Friends and family of Baranof Elementary students are reminded that the submission deadline for artwork for the Artwise fundraiser is noon March 25.
Individuals can log on to http://www.artwise.com/ for instructions. Students’ artwork will be uploaded by their teachers. After reviewing requirements, artists can drop work off at the Baranof front office. Those with questions may call Kat Richards at 738-8772.
Teacher-Ranger
Applicants Sought
Sitka National Historical Park is currently accepting applications to fill the position of Teacher-Ranger-Teacher for the summer of 2014.
TRT is an eight-week professional development opportunity for licensed K-12 public and private school teachers to create education experiences for students within Sitka National Historical Park. The selected candidate will receive free dorm-style park housing, a TRT uniform and earn a $3,000 stipend at the conclusion of his/her season.

Fish to Schools
Celebration Set
All are invited to join Sitka School Board President Lon Garrison, Sitka Local Food Network’s Lisa Sadleir-Hart and Sitka Conservation Society’s Tracy Gagnon 6:30-7:30 p.m. March 20 at Blatchley Middle School library to celebrate the local success of Fish to Schools.
The three will discuss efforts to make Fish to Schools a statewide initiative so students across Alaska can access local seafood through the school lunch program. Light refreshments will be provided. For more information, contact Ray Friedlander, SCS, 747-7509.
Brown Bear
Season Opens
The brown bear hunting season opens March 15 in Game Management Unit 4 with two registration hunts. Both hunts have different closing dates. Inside drainages (RB089) closes May 20, and outside drainages (RB088) close May 31.
For boundary clarifications, refer to the 2013-14 Alaska Hunting Regulations and online maps.
Hunters must have a registration permit, valid hunting license and big game locking tag prior to hunting. Register at a Fish and Game office, or online at www.adfg.alaska.gov.
Hunters may harvest one brown bear every four regulatory years in GMU4. For more information call the Sitka Fish and Game office at 747-5449.
Spring Art Walk
Set for Friday
The Annual Spring Art Walk is planned 5-9 p.m. Friday. The Greater Sitka Arts Council and the Sitka Arti Gras Music and Arts Festival event will feature both downtown galleries and other venues.
A new venue this year, UAS will celebrate the opening of its new art classroom with works by faculty and an exhibit of wilderness art from the Sitka National Historical Park.
Another first-time participant is Unity Botanicals and Backcountry Bodyworks, in the Seward Street Mall.
Other participants include Fisherman’s Eye, Sitka Rose Gallery, Old Harbor Books, Island Artists Gallery, The Larkspur Café, Homeport Eatery, Robertson Gallery and Custom Framing, Tommy Joseph’s Raindance Gallery and The Loft, on Oja Street.

Body Blast Slated
Body Blast Bootcamp is set at the Hames Center 6:30 a.m. Fridays.
The class is a total body, heart-pumping, aerobic- and strength-conditioning workout.
