Pie Sale For
    Father’s Day
    Blatchley Middle School students raising money for an educational trip to Washington, D.C., will sell pies for Father’s Day 3-7 p.m. June 13 and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. June 14 at AC Lakeside.

    Salmon Derby
    Awards Thursday
    Salmon Derby contestants will gather with families and friends at Centennial Hall 7 p.m. Thursday, June 12,  to congratulate successful anglers and pick up an array of prizes.
    Sitka Sportsman’s Association will hand out 50 hidden weight prizes of $50 each in addition to prizes for five places in total weight.
    Winners will be announced for the five hidden weight incentive prizes of $500 each funded by Samson Tug & Barge Co.
    Door prizes require anglers to be present to claim $1,500 in awards drawn from derby tickets, fish weigh-in stubs, and cold fish tickets.
    Heading the long list of donations from businesses, organizations and individuals are major prizes of $1,500 cash from AC Lakeside, a 7-foot-10-inch Mercury inflatable plus 3.5 hp Mercury outboard motor valued at $2,000 from Gary’s Outboard, and Alaska Airlines system-wide tickets (value $2,500) plus $7,500 cash from Sitka Sportsman’s Association. Trophies for the top three places are displayed at Sea Mart.
    Additional special prizes will be claimed by youths for their entered king salmon. Their trophies are displayed at Harris Aircraft Service.

    Promoted
    Northrim Bank President and CEO Joe Beedle has announced the promotion of Lori Downing to assistant branch manager at the Alaska Pacific/Sitka Northrim Bank.
    Downing began her banking career six years ago when she joined the Sitka branch. She started as an on-call teller and has moved her way through various operations positions, including branch supervisor.
    Downing is responsible for the oversight of the Sitka financial center’s branch operations.

    Only Fools Run
    At Midnight Set
    Southeast Alaska Independent Living’s 11th annual Only Fools Run at Midnight 5K or 1-mile run, walk, or wheel is set to begin at the fire hall at 11 p.m. June 21 with a costume parade. The race will begin at 11:59 p.m.
    Pre-registration is through June 19 and the first 100 get a T-shirt. Register at First Bank, Hames Center, Old Harbor Books, the SAIL office and SAILinc.org. Registrations are also accepted on the night of the event at the fire hall at 10:30 p.m.
    Groups of five of more people connected in some form or fashion can enter the race as a “centipede.” Awards will be given to best costumes, centipedes and top finishers. Door prizes will be offered. Contact SAIL at 747-6859 for more information.
    The event is a fundraiser for SAIL, which provides independent living services to Southeast Alaskans with disabilities or those over the age of 60.
    SAIL’s five core services include: advocacy, information and referral, de-institutionalization, independent living skills training and peer support. SAIL is also a support for home modifications and assistive technology. Outdoor Recreation and Community Access is SAIL’s longstanding recreation program providing inclusive recreation activities.

    Wildlife Cruise
    Slated for July 4
    Sitka Maritime Heritage Society will hold a benefit St. Lazaria wildlife cruise and Kruzof Island beach picnic 3:30-8 p.m. July 4.
    A naturalist guide will be on board. Participants can take a picnic lunch.
    Tickets are $90 at Ben Franklin. A total of 35 tickets will be sold. For more information call 206-920-2155 or email sitkamartime.org.
    Fires/grills, condiments, plates, cutlery are provided. Food, drink and skewers should be taken.  Kruzof beach landing involves descending a short ladder.


    Music Festival
    Concert Saturday
    The Sitka Summer Music Festival continues 7:30 p.m. Saturday with a Barber String Quartet and a Brahms piano quintet. Musicians Benjamin Breen, Kirsten Doctor, Zuill Bailey, Awadagin Pratt and the Catalyst Quartet will be featured in concert at Centennial Hall.
    Tickets are $20, $10 for ages 6-12, available at Old Harbor Books, online at sitkamusicfestival.org, or at the door.

    Crab Feed Sunday
    The annual Sitka Summer Music Festival crab feed will be 3 p.m. June 15 at the Crescent Harbor Shelter.
    The event is sponsored by Silver Bay Seafoods. Dungeness crab, salads and desserts will be served. Tickets are $30, or $20 for ages 10 and under, available at Old Harbor Books, online at sitkamusicfestival.org, or at the shelter until they’re sold out.


    Presbyterians Set
    Event June 23-27
    An interdenominational summer event, Hometown Nazareth, will be hosted at Sitka Presbyterian Church 9:30 a.m.-noon daily June 23-27. Kids age 4 through finishing sixth grade are invited to participate.
    Registration forms are available at First Presbyterian Church ahead of time, or register at 8:30 a.m. Monday.
    The theme is ‘‘Hometown Nazareth: Where Jesus was a Kid.’’
    Attendees will explore what it was like to live in the town where Jesus grew up – visit a Bible-times marketplace, sing songs, play teamwork-building games, eat snacks, visit Jesus’ mom, Mary, and learn verses to remind them of God’s word, presenters said.
    The day will include ‘‘God sightings’’ and will conclude with a celebration of worship.
    A team from Southminster Presbyterian Church in Portland, Oregon, will present the program through cooperation of First Presbyterian Church Sitka and Friends of Southeast Alaska.     Sitkan Promoted
    Eric Manewal was promoted from Captain to Major in a ceremony held this past weekend at Camp Murray, Washington. Manewal serves as a pilot in the Washington Air National Guard, 194th Air Support Operations Group. He resides in Sitka and is the son of Mary Therese Thompson and Ernest Manewal.


    Volunteers Needed
    To Move Magazines
    A few volunteers with strong backs are needed to help clear out old magazines and journals left behind in Stratton Library on the SJ campus.
    The group will work 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 12. Call the library with questions at 747-8708.
