LUTHERAN QUILTERS – Members of the Quilts for Comfort Group stand between pews draped with some of the 205 quilts they made, in the Sitka Lutheran Church Tuesday. The group made the quilts for five local non-profits and one in Anchorage. Native Games
Part of Event
The Sheldon Jackson Museum will teach children about Alaska Native games as part of its At Saxan family program 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16.
The free third Saturday program will include playing games inside the museum and using throwing boards outdoors. It is best for children ages 6-10. Individuals can dress accordingly and note that if weather is poor, games will be played only inside, not outside.

Services Set
The Staton family will hold a Celebration of Life for Ryan Norman Staton at 5 p.m. on Aug. 2 at Centennial Hall.
Ryan was born Nov. 22, 1989, and died July 13, 2014.
‘‘The Staton family invites everyone who loved Ryan as much as we did to attend and share the memories of his life with us,’’ the family said.

Playground is
Meeting Topic
The steering committee for the proposed community playground will hold a public meeting and open house 7-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at Centennial Hall.
The playground steering committee will present information on the proposed location of the playground at Crescent Park, be describing the process for getting the proposed playground built and be recruiting volunteers to help during the different phases of the project.
All interested individuals are invited to attend. Children are welcome.

Auditions Set
For Melodrama
The Greater Sitka Arts Council announces auditions for the melodrama ‘‘Paris of the Pacific’’ 7-9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18, and Tuesday, Aug. 19, at the Pioneers Homer Chapel.
The melodrama is about the 1867 exchange. Ira Snelling is directing and Jeff Budd will produce.
There are at least 10 parts and up to 14 to 16 are possible. There is a need for four women and six men. The play will be held Oct. 16 as part of the Alaska Day celebration.
The producer expects a minimum of 10 rehearsals starting in September and at least twice a week. Those with questions may call Jeff at 747-4821.
SCDC to Meet
Sitka Community Development Corporation will meet 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, at the Pioneers Home Manager’s House.
SCDC is a community supported non-profit working to establish permanently affordable housing in Sitka. Members of the public are being encouraged to attend. For more information call 747-2860.
