Library Announces
    Card Sign-up Event
    September is Library Card Sign-up Month and Kettleson Memorial Library is joining the American Library Association and public libraries nationwide to make sure that everyone has  the opportunity to get one.
    Throughout the course of the month, the library will grant patrons with free replacement cards. Resources at Kettleson are available to anyone who has a library card.
    ‘‘Our library offers online access to important educational resources and databases plus entertainment, periodicals and of course an impressive collection of print and e-books, movies and audio materials,’’ the library said.

    To Visit Saturday
    Fairbanks author Debbie Miller will talk about king salmon and sign her latest children’s book, ‘‘A King Salmon Journey,’’ 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at Old Harbor Books.
    The public is invited to attend.

    Chookaneidi to Meet
    A Chookaneidi meeting is planned 6 p.m. Sept. 9 and song practice is set 6 p.m. Sept. 11 at 205 Baranof Street.

    Health Summit
    Planning on Tap
    Registration is open for the Sitka Health Summit’s Planning Day set Friday, Oct. 3, at Centennial Hall.
    The Sitka Health Summit is offering each chosen initiative $2,000 in seed money and year-round organizational support. Planning day is an opportunity for diverse community members to collaborate on community health and wellness goals for the coming year.

    SAFV to Offer
    Free Training
    Sitkans Against Family Violence will start its free community training 9 a.m-4 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Unitarian Fellowship Hall, 408 Marine Street.
    Scheduled are presentations about the history of violence against women, cultural considerations for those providing services to Alaska Native clients, and self-care. A session on the dynamics of domestic violence will follow from 6 to 9 p.m.
    ‘‘Everyone interested in understanding the issues is welcome,’’ a press release said. ‘‘As a community, we must make an effort so that everyone can be safe in his or her home.’’

    Open Gyms Set
    Students of Sitka High School and Pacific High are invited to open gyms at Sitka High School Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:15 p.m. to 9:15 p.m.
    Open gyms will go through the end of November. Any questions can be directed to 966-1956, LieuDell Goldsberry, SHS activities director.


Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital hosts free health-related speaker series
     Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital is hosting “Doc Talks,” a free, health-related speaker series that will run on Wednesdays starting Sept. 10.
    Each Wednesday, 7-8 p.m., a Mt. Edgecumbe provider will present a different topic and will be available to answer questions from the audience. Community members may choose which topics are of interest and attend as many as they like.
    Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital is not only focused on treating people once they are ill, but also on education and prevention, a press release said.
    No pre-registration is needed.
    The series will run Sept. 10-Nov. 19 and will be held at the Hames Center. Healthy snacks and refreshments will be provided beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the educational session starting at 7 p.m.
    The schedule includes:
    –Sept. 10: Dr. Sul-Russ Thorward, ‘‘SAD (seasonal affective disorder): winter blues or is it something more serious?’’;
