Quilt Trunk Show

Moved to Friday

National quilt teacher Rob Appell will be in Sitka this weekend to teach quilt classes and for a free trunk show.

The trunk show, originally scheduled for tonight, has been moved to Friday due to plane delays. He will show his many landscape quilts 5:30 p.m. Friday at the NSRAA building. The public is invited.

Following the show, at 6 p.m., Appell will teach “Sewing Machine Tips and Tricks” at the NSRAA building. Cost of the class is $10, payable at the door. Sewing machines are not required. 

He will instruct his ‘‘Endangered Species’’ quilt 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21. Quilt kits are available at Abby’s Reflection.  The cost of the eight-hour class is $50.

On Sunday, Feb. 22, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., quilters will learn how to make Appell’s ‘‘Dolphin Dance’’ quilt.  The beginner’s quilt uses a focal, novelty  fabric along with five coordinating ones. The fabric does not need to be dolphins. The class will be held at NSRAA and is $50.

Experienced and beginning quilters are invited to sign up for classes at Abby’s Reflection.

Harp Sing Set

The Fourth Sunday Sitka Sacred Harp Sing is set 3:30-5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, at the Pioneers Home Chapel.

Volunteers Sought

On SJ Campus

The Sitka Fine Arts Camp will host a volunteer day 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday on the SJ Campus. Volunteers should  meet at 9 a.m. in front of Whitmore Hall. A hot lunch will be provided at noon in Sweetland S100.

SHS Reunion for

1959-1965 Slated

Sitka High School classes of 1959-1965 will have a class reunion July 1-4 in Sitka.

The total cost is $140, which includes the cruise, or $105 without.

The event starts with a boat cruise 5 p.m.  July 1. A cocktail party will be July 2 at Centennial Hall. Cocktail hour and dinner will be 6 p.m. July 3 at Westmark Sitka. Class members should meet at the Elks Lodge parking lot to march in the parade on July 4, followed by a picnic at the main shelter of Halibut Point Recreation Area.

‘Landslides In

Southeast’ Topic

Of UAS Lecture

 Soil scientist Dennis Landwehr of the U.S. Forest Service will lecture on “Landslides in Southeast Alaska” 7:30-9 p.m.  tonight at the UAS campus in room 229. The illustrated lecture is free, and the public is invited. Refreshments will be served.

School District Alerts

Active-Duty Parents

Because of the need for additional information required by the Legislature, the Sitka School District is requesting parents/guardians who are in the qualified uniformed services to complete a form that can be picked up at any school office anytime or during parent-teacher conferences or on-line at www.sitkaschools.org.

Deadline for completed forms is March 15. If a completed form has not been received by then, the school will assume a parent or guardian is not on active military status.

The forms may be returned to any school office. Those with questions may call 747-8622.

Qualified uniformed services include Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Alaska National Guard, Alaska Naval Militia, Alaska State Defense Force, Commissioned Corp NOAA, Commissioned Corps Public Health Service, Army National Guard and Air National Guard.

Bear Reminders

Given for Spring

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game reminds residents that bears may show up earlier this year, given the mild winter conditions. Bears emerging from winter hibernation will immediately start searching for food to restore energy reserves.

Pro-actively removing attractants, such as garbage and waste, before the bears show up will encourage them to seek natural food sources, Fish and Game said. Sheds, garages or other sturdy bear-resistant containers should be used for securing garbage.

ADF&G regulations prohibit negligently leaving out food and garbage in a manner that attracts bears.

Pet food should remain indoors where it will not attract and encourage bear visits, and bird feeders should be removed. Barbeque grills should be cleaned up after use to minimize attractants. To minimize garbage odors, bones and meat scraps can be frozen until the day of pick up or until the items can be properly disposed of.

Residents with chicken coops, fruit trees and fish smokers should consider the use of an electric fence to discourage damage from bears. In the absence of human-caused attractants, bears generally move off to other areas and seek natural foods.

Hikers, walkers, joggers and runners are reminded to be alert for bear sign and bears, especially during early morning and late evening periods. Be safe and bear smart by traveling with groups of people and keeping dogs on a leash, Fish and Game said.
