Wrestling Meeting
Slated April 14
A get-together to meet the new Sitka High School wrestling coach and to plan fundraising activities for the upcoming fall season is scheduled 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, in the high school commons.
All SHS and eighth-grade wrestlers, along with their parents, are invited.

Toilet Paper Run
Fundraiser April 9
The Sitka High track and field team will be conducting its annual Toilet Paper Run fundraiser 5-7 p.m. Thursday, April 9.
Student athletes will be offering a trade of toilet paper for a monetary donation or for a donation of toilet paper to trade at another house.
The team expressed appreciation to the community for supporting this event.
Dangers of
Drinking on
Health List
Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium is joining organizations across the country in observing Alcohol Awareness Month to spread the word and prevent alcohol abuse.
Drinking too much alcohol increases people’s risk of injuries, violence, drowning, liver disease and some types of cancer, SEARHC said in a press release. It is encouraging community members to learn about the dangers of drinking too much.
The Alaska Department of Health and Services says Alaska has one of the highest per capita alcohol consumption rates in the nation and the prevalence of alcohol dependence and alcohol abuse, at 14 percent, is twice the national average of 7 percent.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has data that shows alcohol poisoning death rates rank highest in Alaska; 46.5 deaths per million residents.
In addition, SEARHC said, a new study suggests that too much alcohol in middle age can increase one’s stroke risk as much as high blood pressure or diabetes.
SEARHC offers the following strategies for those who drink too much and wish to improve their health by cutting back or quitting.
–Limit your drinking to no more than 1 drink a day for women or 2 drinks a day for men.
–Keep track of how much you drink.
–Choose a day each week when you will not drink.
–Don’t drink when you are upset.
–If you are concerned about someone else’s drinking, offer to help.

Young Performers
To Present Play
The Sitka Fine Arts Camp’s Young Performers Theater will present its final production of the season, ‘‘William Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor!’’ 7 p.m. April 17 and 5 p.m. April 18 at the Odess Theater at Allen Hall.
Students in fifth through eighth grades will take to the stage to perform “Shakespeare’s Sitcom”: a tale of schemes, disguises and romance. The show is appropriate for all ages.
Tickets are $10 general admission, $5 students and seniors, and free for children under 5. They are available at Old Harbor Books and at the door.
SCH Foundation
Meets April 13
The Sitka Community Hospital Foundation will hold its quarterly meeting noon Monday, April 13, in the hospital classroom.

Benefit at Elks

Better Breathers
Club to Meet
The Better Breathers Club will meet 1-2 p.m. Friday, April 10, at Swan Lake Senior Center.
Donna Callintini, local emergency planning representative, will discuss emergency preparedness. Jim Berry will lead the discussion on better living with COPD.
The Better Breathers Club is a support group for people who are having trouble breathing, using oxygen or those with chronic lung disease (especially COPD, but also asthma, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, lung cancer, sarcoidosis and other chronic lung diseases).

4-H Outdoor
Series to Run
The Alaska Way of Life 4-H project will host an Outdoor Adventure series on Wednesdays, April 15-May 20. Youths in grades 4-6 are invited to attend to practice their skills in fire building, compass navigation, and knots to build a shelter.
The fee for the six week series is $10. Register with Mary at the Sitka Conservation Society or call 747-7509.
Eco Challenge
Slated for Youths
Sitka Conservation Society will host the second annual Kids Eco Challenge 9:45 a.m.-noon Saturday, April 25. Kids and their teammates will test their outdoor skills and work together to navigate and survive the challenging course.
School-aged youths can sign up as individuals or as a team of four by Wednesday, April 22, for $5 per person. For more information or to register, contact Mary at 747-7509.

Responding to the requests of athletes, coaches and parents, the Sitka School Board voted unanimously Monday against a proposal that would have changed Sitka High School’s classification from Class 4A, which includes Juneau and Ketchikan, to the 3A, which has schools with enrollment of 100 to 400 students.

Memories of Sitka’s first radio station have been revived by a St. Louis, Mo., man who was one of the founders. Fred A. Wiethuchter recently wrote a letter to “Mayor Sitka, Alaska” asking about the town since he was here during World War II. He was an Army private at Fort Ray when he was attached to Armed Services Radio Station KRAY and WVCX ....
