Set at St. Peter’s

UAS Sitka Campus to Hold

Commencement on May 1

 The University of Alaska Southeast, Sitka Campus, will hold its commencement exercises 7 p.m. Friday, May 1. This year, it will be held at the Odess Theater in Allen Hall on the SJ Campus.

Graduating students, their families and friends, and the general public are invited to attend. The university faculty and staff will join the celebration along with Sitka Campus Advisory Council members, UA President Pat Gamble, UAS Chancellor John Pugh and Provost Richard Caulfield, and several University of Alaska regents.

Commencement speaker Teri Rofkar, an internationally known Tlingit artist from Sitka, will be presented with an honorary doctor of fine arts degree. 

The faculty speaker will be Dr. Paul Bahna. Rachel Prochnow, a graduating HIM student, will offer her reflections.

Approximately three dozen local students are receiving diplomas, certificates, and occupational endorsements. 

 Graduating students are asked to arrive at the Odess Theater in Allen Hall between 6 and 6:30 p.m. so they can be robed and ready for lineup beginning at 6:30 p.m. sharp. Caps and gowns for students will be pressed and ready for them at Allen Hall. 

A reception will follow, with music provided by Joshua Houston and Kammie Daniels. Refreshments will be served.

Complimentary photographs of students and their families by Owen Kindig will be taken following the ceremony.

 

Quilters Meet

The Ocean Wave Quilt Guild will meet Tuesday, May 5, at Grace Harbor church for its final meeting of the season.

Doors open at 6 p.m. for a salad potluck. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m., with a business meeting, elections for next year’s officers., show and tell, and refreshments.

The program will include a display of antique quilts by Charlotte Candelaria and a brief presentation of her recent trip to the quilt show in Paducah, Kentucky.

The guild meets the first Tuesday of every month, September to May, and is open to all quilters. Call Jan, Lovettt, president, at 747-3653 for more information.

Garage, Bake Sale

For SHS Softball

The Sitka High School softball team will have a garage and bake sale fundraiser 4-8 p.m. Saturday, May 9.

Those who have donations that the team can sell are asked to drop them off 4-8 p.m. Friday, May 8, in the SHS commons, or call Nicki McArthur at 752-0573 or Sandy Holder at 738-0124 to arrange for the items to be picked up.

Proceeds go to the SHS Lady Wolves softball team.

 

Teen Lab Open at

Kettleson Library

The Teen Lab at Kettleson Memorial Library is available to ages 12-18. A sound recording booth, Macs, iPads, cameras, a green screen and mobile ready-animator stations that allow for the creation of stop-motion animation videos are some of the resources available to be used at the library every day of the week.

Teens are to reserve the lab space to use the equipment. This service is free.

The library supports active learning by encouraging teens to find their own way with different resources. The library encourages teens to explore the equipment available and let their imaginations inform their creations.

The Teen Lab has received support from the Sitka Alaska Permanent Charitable Trust.

STA Annual

Meeting Includes

Family Activities

The Sitka Tribe of Alaska annual meeting, to be held 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 2, at Blatchley Middle School, will include pool and play time for Tribal children, free of charge.

Pool time has been expanded and will begin early, at 10 a.m., for the first of three one-hour shifts. Each session will be limited to 50 participants in the pool; sign up for the sessions will be at the Community Schools office in Blatchley Middle School. Children under 7 must be accompanied in the pool by an adult.

The multipurpose room will also be open beginning at 10 a.m., with riding toys, balls, and other playground items for use.

Meeting Tuesday

The Sitka High football meeting 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, at the Sitka High School library.

Parents, players and anyone interested about getting more information about the upcoming football season are being encouraged to attend. For more information contact Coach Hedrick 966-1939.

 

Easter Group

To Meet May 4

The Easter Group will hold its annual meeting 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Monday, May 4, in the lower level of the Lutheran Church on Lincoln Street.

On the agenda are review and update of plans, goals and strategies; introduction of a proposed financial policy, evaluation of major annual projects; initial review of financial records and a request for endorsement of a national housing policy. Artists Called for

Haines State Fair

Artists and artisans wanting to exhibit their work at the Haines Southeast Alaska Sate Fair are reminded that the Sitka deadline is July 4.

The Greater Sitka Arts Council is collecting work at no charge to the artist to be sent to Haines. Items must be packed and ready to ship.

Aerial Silks Class

Set for May 10

A very beginner aerial silks workshop will be offered noon Sunday, May 10, at the Hames Center.

Those who want to try out an aerial silks are invited to learn from a former Cirque Du Soleil performer. Sign up at www.hamescenter.org to reserve a spot. Space is limited.
