Florida Couple to be

Lutheran Volunteers

Shirley and John Hamblen from Leesburg, Fla., will offer their lifetime of ministry through choral and instrumental music at Sitka Lutheran Church this summer.

They have served churches throughout the south and the Seattle area.

During a 2010 cruise they discovered Sitka Lutheran Church and the 1844 Kessler organ.

They will greet visitors, explain the rich Finnish-Lutheran history, interpret the historic Lutheran Cemetery, care for the building, offer their music ministry skills and share the gospel to Sitkans and visitors in July and August.

Worship services are 10:30 a.m. Sundays. A soup supper, followed by short prayer, is 6 p.m. Wednesdays. Messy Church is monthly worship experience that features a full-meal, activities for families and informal worship.

Pickle-Making

Offered to 4-H

Sarah Lewis will teach a free pickles and sauerkraut how-to class for 4-H members of all ages 10 a.m.-noon Friday, July 17.

Philosophy Discussed

Airline Miles

Sitka Seafood Festival is seeking airline tickets, miles or companion fare donations to help entertainment and guest chefs travel to the festival, Aug. 7 and 8.

Scholarships Offered

To Alaska Youths

Summer of Heroes, a partnership program with Alaska Communications and Boys and Girls Clubs-Alaska, supports youth development programs throughout the state.

Five young Alaskans, ages 6-18, plus one from the Employee Program, will be recognized as heroes and receive a $1,500 college scholarship for making a difference within their communities.

In addition, each hero will be honored during a ceremony at the Alaska State Fair next month. Nominations can be made through the Summer of Heroes website at http://www.alaskacommunications.com/summerofheroes. Youths need not be a member of a Boys and Girls Club.

Alaska Communications has contributed a total of $60,000 to Boys and Girls Clubs–Alaska through the Summer of Heroes program.

 

Sitka Folk Concert

Tickets on Sale

Tickets for the 7 p.m. July 17 Sitka Folk Concert at The Loft featuring Lauren Tronick and Raphael Shapiro are on sale for $10 at Old Harbor Books. Only 45 will be sold because of space limitations.

The concert will begin with a set by the Lauren Wild Trio.

 

SHS Wrestling

Team Benefit Set

The Sitka High School wrestling team will sponsor a youth wrestling camp Aug. 3-7 in the SHS auxiliary gym for those in first through eighth grades.

The cost will be $100 at the door and $90 if pre-registered. Times are: first-fourth grades 1-3 p.m., fifth-eighth grades 3 p.m.-5 p.m.

Food Safety

Training Offered

A certified food protection manager training workshop will be offered July 29 in Fairbanks and Palmer and by videoconference in Sitka, Juneau and Valdez.

The workshop, which is hosted by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. State regulations require that all food establishments have at least one certified food protection manager to ensure compliance with food safety regulations.

White E Kids Shop

Sale on Saturday

The children’s store at the White Elephant Shop will have a special sale noon-3 p.m. Saturday, and 6-8 p.m. Monday. All items that can be put in a grocery bag will be $5.

‘‘There is a good selection of all sizes and items to purchase to start to get ready for school at a great savings,’’ the White Elephant said. 

 

SCVB Board Meets

The Sitka Convention and Visitors Bureau board of directors will meet 6 p.m. on Monday, July 13, in the SCVB offices at 303 Lincoln Street, Suite 4.
