For Elmer and Ulises Diaz
Family, friends and community of Sitka are invited to attend church services remembering Elmer and Ulises Diaz, two sons inseparable in life, as in death, of Guillermo and Guadalupe Diaz, who perished in the Kramer Avenue landslide.
A holy hour prayer vigil will be 7 p.m. tonight, Aug. 21, at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church.
Another service will be 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at Grace Harbor Church based on Psalm 46, God our refuge and strength.
A funeral Mass and memorial service will be announced at a later date. Those with questions may call Karen at 747-7803.

Road Closed
Blue Lake Road is closed to foot and vehicle traffic due to damage caused by the heavy rainstorms. Those with questions can call the U.S. Forest Service at 747-6671.

Story Time Set
At National Park
Sitka National Historical Park will sponsor a preschool story time about whales 10-10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31.
Participants will read a story, complete an activity and craft, eat a snack, and take home a worksheet about whales. Participants must be accompanied by a parent/guardian for the duration of the program.

Park Invites Community to
Founders Day Celebration
The community is invited to Sitka National Historical Park to celebrate Founders Day Aug. 28-29, the annual celebration of the creation of the National Park Service.
This year’s 99th birthday celebration will include children’s games, cake, documentary film screenings, a historic photo exhibit and the chance to name the park’s new bison mascot.
The schedule of events will be:
Historic park photo exhibit Friday, Aug. 28, in the visitor center. Participants can take a walk through time by viewing seldom-seen photos from the park’s past. The historic park photos document the park’s history as a unit of the National Park Service.
‘‘America’s Best Idea’’ documentary film will be shown 7 p.m. Aug. 28 and 3 p.m. Aug. 29.
The documentary focuses on the history of the country’s national parks and the people who have advocated for their designation and protection. Episode 6 highlights the establishment of Alaska’s national parks.
The family celebration on Saturday, Aug. 29, will begin with 1-2 p.m. family games. Participants will join rangers for family games at the park’s visitor center. Games include “pin-the-tail on the sea otter,” animal tag, “Raven, Raven, Eagle” and a treasure hunt.
Cake, photos with the park’s bison mascot, and a park mascot naming activity will be 2-3 p.m. Saturday. Join the park’s new bison mascot for some cake to celebrate the National Park Service’s 99th birthday. Photos will be taken with the bison. Attendees can submit names for the naming contest.

Responding to the requests of athletes, coaches and parents, the Sitka School Board voted unanimously Monday against a proposal that would have changed Sitka High School’s classification from Class 4A, which includes Juneau and Ketchikan, to the 3A, which has schools with enrollment of 100 to 400 students.

Memories of Sitka’s first radio station have been revived by a St. Louis, Mo., man who was one of the founders. Fred A. Wiethuchter recently wrote a letter to “Mayor Sitka, Alaska” asking about the town since he was here during World War II. He was an Army private at Fort Ray when he was attached to Armed Services Radio Station KRAY and WVCX ....
