Caregiving

Class Offered

The Savvy Caregiver, an eight-hour educational workshop for family caregivers who are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia, will be held 4:30-8:30 p.m. Sept. 8 and 9 at Brave Heart Volunteers, in the Pioneers Home Manager’s House.  A light dinner will be served.

Amber Smith, M.D., educational specialist for Alzheimer’s Resources of Alaska, will facilitate the workshop.

Savvy Caregiver was developed by the University of Minnesota to provide family caregivers the best possible dementia-specific care education. It provides thorough knowledge and information about Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia, skills for person centered caregiving, and discusses possible decision points and emotions families may face.

The workshop is appropriate for family members guiding care from a distance and families providing direct care in Sitka.

Reservations are required for the free workshop. Contact Krisanne Rice at Brave Heart Volunteers, 747-4600, or Amber Smith, 907-586-6044, for additional details.
