Veterans to Meet

Sitka Veterans Association will meet 7 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Community Health Building, first floor conference room, on the SEARHC campus.

The meeting is to finalize the organization of the Sitka Veterans Association, to include election of officers.

Holiday Dinners

Meeting on Tap

The first holiday dinners committee meeting for the community Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners will be 6 p.m. Oct. 12 at the ANB Founders Hall.

Anyone interested in helping plan, volunteer or donate to the dinners is welcome to attend. All donations will be used toward the purchase of food for both dinners, with fundraising efforts concluded prior to Thanksgiving. 

Alaska Native Brotherhood Camp 1 and Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp 4 will host both the annual community dinners at the ANB Founders Hall. 

Anyone wishing to contribute can mail a check made out to ‘‘Community Holiday Dinners/ANB,’’ to Alaska Native Sisterhood, c/o K. Lucas, 235 Katlian, Sitka, AK 99835, and a tax deductible receipt will be returned to donors by mail.

The dinners have been a Sitka tradition for more than 40 years, bringing together the community to gather in thanks and celebration. All are welcome. Further information or any questions can be directed to Kerry at 752-0654 or Karen at 747-7803.

 

Wearable Arts

Show March 26

The Greater Sitka Arts Council announces the 2016 Wearable Art Show theme, ‘‘Alaska and 8 Stars.’’ Two shows will be March 26 at the Performing Arts Center.

Artists are welcome to use the theme, or not, in their creations. A mandatory dress rehearsal will be March 25. Registration forms will be available within the next month and the deadline for registering is Feb. 29.

Auditions Set for

Live Radio Theater

Sitka Community Theater will hold auditions for Live Radio Theater 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, and Thursday, Oct. 22, at the Rasmuson Student Center, on the SJ campus. 

Live Radio Theater is a performance of old-time radio plays and modern plays read live before an audience with sound effects on stage. This year’s show is 7 p.m. Nov. 20 at the Sitka Performing Arts Center.

Directors will be looking for voice actors, a sound effects team, tech crew and accompanist. No experience or preparation is needed, and those who can’t make auditions can set up an appointment. There will be minimal weekend and rehearsals in the monthlong preparation leading up to the performance.

This year’s plays are the short classics “Pride and Prejudice,” directed by Stefanie Ask, and “For Business Reasons,” directed by Shira Kahan. The third short play is a new work by Zachary Desmond, who will also direct.

SCT is a project of the Greater Sitka Arts Council, with help from the Sitka Fine Arts Camp. Those with questions may call 738-0602.

 

Tribal Council Seats

Deadline Oct. 9

Tribal citizens seeking one of four open Tribal Council seats are reminded to file the Notice of Candidacy and related materials with Election Supervisor Rose Demmert no later than Friday, Oct. 9.

Candidacy packets are available at the Sitka Tribe of Alaska office.

Tribal elections will be Nov. 10.

The election supervisor’s office hours are 4:30-6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at 456 Katlian Street. Call Demmert, 38-5450, with questions.

 

Native Heritage

Month on Tap

November is Alaska Native Heritage Month – otherwise known as Native American Heritage Month – and Sitka Tribe of Alaska will host an ANHM community planning session noon, Friday, Oct. 16, in the Sitka School District SEACC Building at 205 Baranof Street. A light lunch will be provided.

Sitkans and Sitka agencies and organizations are invited to attend, and have their activities placed on the ANHM calendar. STA and other local groups will host many activities during November, including an entrance parade and several community dinners.

Unitarians Gather

Sunday’s Unitarian Fellowship meeting will feature Kathy Kyle presenting “Spirit in Practice: Communal Worship Practices” at the Unitarian Fellowship Hall. The 10:30 a.m. meeting will be followed by the program at 10:45 a.m.

Participants will be encouraged to reflect upon meaningful experiences of worship and to explore ways to enhance the experience of communal worship.

Soup and bread follows the program at noon. The Fellowship Hall is located at 408 Marine Street, with parking behind off Spruce Street.

 

Sexual Assault

Response Training

Slated Oct. 12-14

Advocates, law enforcement, health-care providers and other interested community members are invited to a a free sexual assault coordinated community response training 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Oct. 12-14 at the Sheet’ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi.

Presenters from the Alaska Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault will be on hand to present.
