‘Kon-Tiki’ Film

Showing Dec. 13

‘‘Kon-Tiki,’’ the 2013 adventure movie based on Thor Heyerdahl’s 1947 crossing of the South Pacific, will be shown 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13, at the downtown Coliseum.

Heyerdahl and five men built a raft according to pre-Columbian specifications. They then set off on a 101-day journey from South America to the Polynesian Islands. The feature film is based on their legendary voyage.

With a cast of modern Norwegian actors, the film was released in English in 2013 and was an Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Film.

The one-time showing is a fund-raiser for Paths Across the Pacific IX.  Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for students. The movie lasts 96 minutes.

The next international Paths conference will be held in Sitka Aug. 17-20. The presentations will include a focus on the currents and winds of the Southern Hemisphere.

The possibility of changing the name to “Paths Across the Ocean” will be considered for following years. The concept of one ocean is more inclusive of our growing knowledge about this planet’s water links and human mobility around the globe, organizers said.

A communitywide Beachcomber’s Fair will be held on Sunday, Aug. 21, led by Dr. Curtis Ebbesmeyer. A signing for his book “Flotsametrics and the Floating World: How One Man’s Obsession with Runaway Sneakers and Rubber Ducks Revolutionized Ocean Science” will follow.

Volunteers are welcome and needed to help plan the events. Sign up at the movie or contact Nancy at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .
