Work Party on
SJ Campus Set
A Saturday volunteer work party is planned 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 27 on the SJ Campus. Participants will meet at the Yaw Art building. A hot lunch is served at noon.
Tasks include building shelves in the Yaw Art building attic, organizing costumes and props, and painting the hall. If the weather is nice, there is always yard work available. All are welcome to join at any time. Warm clothes are recommended as some of the work space is unheated.

Kindergarten
Sets ‘Sneak Peak’
Baranof Elementary School will host a kindergarten “sneak peak” event 2-3 p.m. Monday, March 28, for preschools, daycare centers and incoming kindergartners with their parents.
During the sneak peak, attendees can visit different classrooms, talk with teachers, do a scavenger hunt to get to know the school, and meet other school personnel.
Children who will be in kindergarten next year are asked to visit during the sneak peak. Registration packets and Baranof parent handbooks will be available. Registration will be March 29, 30 and 31.
Artists Called
For Logo Entry
The City and Borough of Sitka is seeking designs for a new logo for the 2030 Comprehensive Plan.
The logo should showcase the unique character of Sitka. The CBS Planning Department site has more instruction. The Planning Commission will select the winning entry at the March 15 meeting. A $100 gift card will be awarded to the winner.
Book Fair Slated
At Baranof School
The Baranof Elementary Library Book Fair will be held 12:30-6 p.m. Feb. 29, March 1-3.
Proceeds benefit the library. Cash, checks and credit/debit cards are accepted. A raffle of display books and items is planned.
Teen Advisory
Board at Library
The Teen Advisory Board at Kettleson Memorial Library will meet 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, at Sitka Public Library.
Teens 13 and older are invited to join the board. TAB members will share ideas about library programs, the teen area and lab and also about books.

Teen Lab Set at
Public Library
The Teen Lab at Sitka Public Library is available to teens ages 14-18 from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and any time during the weekend hours.
A sound recording booth, iPads, Macs, cameras, a green screen, mobile ready-animator stations that allow for the creation of stop-motion animation videos and a maker cart are some of the resources available at the library.
Teens with a valid library card can reserve the Lab space at the library for up to three hours per day. The service is free and reservations can be made up to 45 days in advance for non-recurring sessions, and up to seven days in advance for recurring sessions. On-the-spot reservations are also possible if the space is not in use.

Safety Discussed
SAIL and Brave Heart Volunteers will host a presentation, ‘‘Home Safety for People with Dementia, Preserving Independence, Enhancing Safety and Reducing Agitation,’’ 10:30 a.m.-noon March 17.

Seminar at UAS
UAS Sitka will be broadcasting seminars from UAF on topics in environmental and human health.
The next will be 4:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 29, in Room 106 on the UAS campus.
Anne-Lise Ducluzeau, SFOS and BLaST postdoctoral researcher, will speak on ‘‘Metabolism and Evolution of Quinones.’’

Parents, Teachers
Meet at Sitka High
Sitka High School parent-teacher conferences will be held Monday, Feb. 29, through Thursday, March 3.
School will not be in session on Friday, March 4.
The high school is scheduled to have an early release for students at 1:30 p.m. on Monday through Thursday.
Conferences times are 2:30-6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, and 2-3:30 p.m. Thursday.
Each day conferences will be held by teachers in their classrooms. Appointments for conferences on any of the four days can be made by contacting individual teachers. Call SHS at 747-3263 with questions.
Emblem Club Meets
Sitka Emblem Club will have a social meeting 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, at the Elks Lodge.
Career Event Set
Weds. at UAS-Sitka
UAS-Sitka Campus will host a “Get Inspired. Get the Facts. Get the Money” event 3-6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24. The community is invited.
Admissions representative Grace Lumba will answer questions about degree program offerings in Juneau, student housing options, financial aid and scholarship opportunities, career services, and study away programs.
PITAAS Director Ronalda Cadiente-Brown will discuss a scholarship program called Preparing Indigenous Teachers and Administrators for Alaskan Schools.
Cadiente-Brown is the executive director of PITAAS, which helps native Alaskans who wish to teach – providing money each year to help cover tuition and fees, books, room and board. PITAAS supports Alaska Native students who are studying for a bachelor’s degree in special or elementary education, a master’s of art in teaching (elementary, secondary, special education) or graduate certificates, endorsements and the master’s of education programs.
Earlier in the day, Cadiente-Brown and Lumba will visit Pacific High, Sitka High and Mt. Edgecumbe High.
AFS Seeking
Host Families
Sitka AFS is seeking host families for the 2016-17 school year.
AFS high school exchange students come from all over the world, attend Sitka High, and become a part of the host family.
This year’s students are from Tajikstan, Thailand, Germany and Paraguay. Local AFS volunteers provided orientation and support.
