AMHS to Waive Cancellation Fees Through April 8
By Sentinel Staff
In response to the current coronavirus pandemic, the Alaska Marine Highway System announced Wednesday that cancellation fees will be waived until April 8.
“AMHS recognizes that its customers may decide to avoid discretionary travel at this time and is allowing reservations to be canceled without incurring a fee or penalty,” the state Department of Transportation said in a press release.
Maintaining passenger safety remains a high priority for the AMHS, and the press release specified that it will focus on cleaning public surfaces regularly.
“AMHS is working closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the United States Coast Guard to ensure our methods and materials remain consistent and current for handling new developments related to COVID-19. AMHS has implemented multilayer cleaning protocols to help prevent the spread of communicable diseases,” the release reads.
The AMHS could not be reached for further comment.

Michael Stringer, environmental specialist for Sitka Tribe of Alaska and a founder of the community garden, takes the concept of Earth Week literally. This weekend he hopes others will share his appreciation for “earth” and things growing in it by joining him in preparing the community garden just behind Blatchley Middle School for another growing season.
