Police Seek Identity Of Human Remains

Skeletal remains found on Kruzof Island more than a week ago have been sent to the state crime lab for examination, police said in a news release today.
“The cause of death is unknown. The investigation continues and more information will be provided once available,” police said in their prepared statement.
Police Chief Robert Baty said boaters exploring the area around World War II fortifications near Shoals Point found the remains on April 12 (Easter), about 500 yards off the shoreline, in the woods.
Sitka Police were contacted at 3:30 p.m., prompting a response within a half hour by the police department, Alaska State Troopers and the U.S. Forest Service enforcement division.
Baty said the team confirmed the remains found “were in fact human,” and included a human skull and lower jaw.
Sitka police started collecting information on people reported missing over the past several years.
“The identity or gender of the remains are unknown at this time,” police said in today’s news release. The remains don’t appear to be an archaeological find.
Sitka Police Department is the lead agency in the investigation, Baty said.
On Saturday, police returned to the area along with the Sitka Fire Department search and rescue team, the Forest Service, and Alaska State Trooper recruits, to conclude the search and recover additional human remains.
“All remains are consistent with belonging to one individual,” police said.
“We’re hoping we can compare (the remains) to dental records from the missing person,” Baty said.
He said police are interested in state medical examiner’s conclusions about the remains, and also in determining the identity of the person.
“It’s closure for family and loved ones, and we want to make sure there’s no foul play,” Baty said.
