Sentinel, Raven Radio Win Alaska Press Club Awards
By Sentinel Staff
Both the Daily Sitka Sentinel and KCAW News received honors at the 2019 Alaska Press Club Awards on April 18 in Anchorage.
Sentinel reporter Shannon Haugland won first place in Best Reporting on Government or Politics for a story on the Sheldon Jackson Museum. Photographer James Poulson won first place in Best Sports Photo and second place in Best Feature Photo.
For KCAW, Robert Woolsey won first place in Best Headline Writing and Katherine Rose won third.
Woolsey also won second for Best Reporting on Government or Politics; and third for Best Public Safety Reporting.
Rose also won first place for Best Profile; second for Best Education Reporting; and second for Best Arts Reporting.
Ari Snider won first place – the Vern McCorkle Award – for Best Business reporting; second for Best Profile; and second for Best Reporting on Health. Snider is KCAW’s Post-Graduate Fellow in Community Journalism, and was an intern reporter last summer at KFSK in Petersburg.
A highlight of the virtual event was the presentation of the 2019 First Amendment Award to Ed Schoenfeld, a 37-year veteran of Southeast Alaska print and radio reporting, including with Coast Alaska. The award, the Press Club’s highest honor, cites his “cutting through divisive rhetoric on both sides of issues,” with stories on politics, transboundary matters, the Alaska Marine Highway System, and regional Native corporations.
