Harbor Masters Gather
Harbor Masters Gather Here for State Meeting
More than 90 waterfront managers from around the state and the Pacific Northwest are in Sitka this week for the 33rd annual conference of the Alaska Association of Harbormasters and Port Administrators. Sitka Harbor Master Stan Eliason said he and others in the local harbor department have been planning for the event since May. The conference opened Monday night and closes Thursday at Centennial Hall.
“The purpose basically is for all of us guys to get together and discuss each other’s different harbors and needs,” he said.
City Administrator Jim Dinley and Mayor Mim McConnell welcomed the participants this morning, followed by comments from AAHPA President Steve Corporon. Rep. Bill Thomas and Sen. Bert Stedman were scheduled to speak during the conference.
Engineers, marine safety, environmental protection, maintenance, mass rescue and water quality are among the topics addressed by guest speakers, which include engineers, and federal and state officials.
Eliason said all harbor masters in Alaska are facing the same issue: how to maintain the infrastructure. Sitka’s hired consultant, Dick Somerville of PND Engineering of Juneau, will make a presentation on Sitka’s master plan 9 a.m. Wednesday. The plan lays out harbor major maintenance and replacement scheduled for the next 50 years, along with recommended harbor rate increases.
The Sitka harbor master said it’s been a lot of work getting prepared for the conference, but he’s happy that Sitka has the honor of being this year’s host community.
“And we couldn’t ask for better weather,” Eliason added.
