A Sitka woman died Sunday of a gunshot wound, after she accidentally shot herself with a rifle on a camping trip at Samsing Cove, police said today.
Police said Amber Peterson, 31, was on a kayak trip to Goddard Hot Springs with one of her brothers over the weekend and had pulled into Samsing on Saturday due to weather.
Police said Peterson was loading her kayak while her brother gathered gear from their camp a short distance away. He told police he heard a gunshot.
Alaska Wildlife Troopers were aboard their boat in one of the harbors when Sitka police received the 911 cell phone call from Peterson’s brother at 10:34 a.m. Sunday. Two Sitka police investigators and a patrol officer joined the troopers for the ride to the cove. Peterson was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Her body has been sent to Anchorage to the medical examiner’s office.
Peterson, the mother of three boys, had lived in Sitka most of her life. Her obituary is on Page 3 of today’s Sentinel.
