The Sitka Little League Major Softball All-Stars destroyed Nunaka City View 17-2 tonight (Friday) to take a 2-0 lead in their best 3-out-of-5 State Championship series in Anchorage.
"The bats came out a swinging today," Sitka manager Mike Callahan said. "Everyone was seeing the ball and getting a piece of it. On the defensive side the girls kept it clean."
The Sitka girls are just one win away from advancing to the Little League West Regionals in San Bernardino, California, July 24-26. The winner of regionals advances to the 2019 Little League Softball World Series in Portland, Oregon, August 7-14.
Sitka pitcher Kaiya Balovich wants to go there. She started and finished the game in just 3 innings with 36 pitches (23 for strikes), allowing 4 hits, 2 runs, and striking out 2 while walking no Nunaka batters.
Nai’a Nelson wants to go. She went 3-4 at the plate, with 2 runs batted in and 3 runs scored.
Tessa Anderson 3-3 (2 RBI, 3 R, 1 BB) wants to go.
So does Dalila Callahan 1-2 (2 R, 1 BB), Kaelynn Balovich 2-3 (2RBI, 1 R, 1 BB), Kayaani Weather (1 RBI, 1 BB), Lei’a Daly 1-1 (1 RBI), Alina Lebahn 1-2 (2 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB), Adriana Denkinger 1-2 (3 RBI, 2 R), Mecca Goldsberry 2-2 (2 RBI, 1 R), Chalice Brenton 1-1 (1 R), and Madison Dill, Tadum Markegard, manager Mike Callahan, and coaches Nikki Balovich and Shannon Callahan.
Sitka notched 16 hits in the game. They scored 6 runs in the first inning, 2 in the second, and 9 in the third to end the game by the run-rule.
Defensively the team went errorless with Denkinger leading the way with 5 fielding put outs.
Sitka also had 16 stolen bases
"Came out on fire," coach Nikki Balovich said. "Everyone was flaming. Zero walk day for Kaiya. Huge hits for all."
Oh, and Kaiya Balovich put on her batters glove as well, going 1-2 (1 RBI, 2 R, 1 BB).
I think she wants to go.
Saturday’s game 3 is at 2 p.m. on the Nunaka Valley Little League fields near Nunaka Valley Elementary School off Boniface Parkway.
