LUTHERAN QUILTERS – Members of the Quilts for Comfort Group stand between pews draped with some of the 205 quilts they made, in the Sitka Lutheran Church Tuesday. The group made the quilts for five local non-profits and one in Anchorage. The remaining quilts are sent to Lutheran World Relief which distributes them to places around the world in need, such as Ukraine, as part of Personal Care Kits. Sitka Swim Team Preview
The pool at Blatchley Middle School is a little more crowded for this season’s opening dual as the Sitka High swimmers return to the water with a deep roster for 2012.
“Numbers are important and we’ve got a few more this season,” head coach Robby Jarvill said. “We have nine girls on the team. We haven’t had nine girls in years, and we’re up to 13 boys.”
The team will face Juneau-Douglas this weekend in their season opener. The meet will run 6-8 p.m. Friday and 8-10 a.m. Saturday at Blatchley pool.
The Sitka boys finished second at state last season after winning the Region 5 championship, and Jarvill said expectations have carried over to this year.
“It all comes down to regionals for half the team and state for the other half. What happens in between now and then is nothing more than organized practice, pretty much,” Jarvill said.
This weekend the team is focused on building competition experience and measuring themselves at this early point in the season, Jarvill said. This weekend may be the first for competition but the team has been working out for longer than the month of August, Jarvill said.
“High school swimming is 12 weeks, and you can’t get to your peak performance in 12 weeks, so if they haven’t been working last spring and throughout the summer then it’s not going to be as easy as they think,” Jarvill said.
This year’s group of swimmers is heavy on the underclassman side, but boasts a significant number of juniors. The team has eight freshmen and four sophomores compared to six juniors and four seniors.
“It’s a pretty good mix,” Jarvill said. “We’ve got some of the top swimmers in the state in that group and we’ve got the numbers to fill three relays at both regionals and state on the girls and boys side.”
Jarvill has been trying to keep that group on track for their season goals by pushing them in practice right up until Friday’s events.
Sitka will be off the following week because an event in Kodiak was canceled. In September the team will compete in Petersburg, Juneau and again in Sitka, and in October the team will head to Juneau once more before the Region championships in Ketchikan.
Anyone interested in volunteering to help with timing at the dual should contact Mike Vieira at 966-1956.
The roster for this weekend’s dual against Juneau-Douglas is:
Levi Adams (senior), Madeline Chadwick (senior), Justin Stenberg (senior), Carl Sundsten (senior), Louis Belley (junior), Paiton Campbell (junior), Spencer Combs (junior), Justin Harang (junior), Robert Miller (junior), Megan Reid (junior), Joy Davis (sophomore), Owen Fulton (sophomore) Celia Lubin (sophomore), Evan McArthur (sophomore), Miles Chadwick (freshman), Brady Harang (freshman), James Morland (freshman), Ava Parrish (freshman), William Pate (freshman), Lea Angela Ramil (freshman), Danika Weaver (freshman), Kaysia Whitmill (freshman).
