Roscoe Glen Max III

Roscoe Glen Max III

Roscoe Glen Max III, beloved uncle, son, brother and friend, passed away on July 27, 2017, in Sitka. He was 48.
Glen was Sheet’ka Kaagwaantaan from the Big Box house and his Lingit name was Kinda.  He was Lingit but also Inupiaq, and has many relatives from the top of the world, Barrow.
A family member said “the love that surrounds his family was immensely comforting and brought much peace. We are humbled and overwhelmed with the outpouring of love from all of Southeast and Barrow.”
Roscoe “Glen” was born on June 6, 1969, in Seattle to Roscoe H. Max Jr. and Vivian Ann Max. He grew up in Pelican then lived in Sitka, where he graduated from Sitka High. He also lived in Yakutat, and had returned to Sitka about three years ago.
Glenn is survived by his loving dad Roscoe (Barbara) of Pelican and Port Orchard, Wash.; sisters Roxanne Houston (Dennis) of Georgetown, Md., and Rhoda Jensen (Jon) of Yakutat; adopted Boston son Ed “Egor” Johnson, Sitka; eight nieces and nephews; paternal auntie Edith Mork; paternal uncle Alden Max; maternal uncle Bill Paddock; and numerous other family and friends.
Glen loved fishing, visiting over coffee or spirits, and helping many with chores, including cleaning up boats and baiting.
Many remember his heart and kindness, his smile, and a willingness to give the shirt off his back.  A cousin said he thought of Glen as a brother.
Although his life was cut short, he lived it to the fullest, savoring and cherishing every moment, sharing many stories with friends and family with deep conviction and laughter.
His true loves were fishing, family, pool, dancing and wrestling. He was a regional wrestling champ in his weight class and helped take the Sitka High Wolves to State.  He was very proud of his dad and sisters and their families, especially his nieces and nephews Josh, Katrina, Jeremiah, Dennis Jr., Jake, Jocelyn, Cody and Jon Jr.
Among favorite family memories were when twins Glen and Rhoda were babies and took great joy in bouncing their two cribs together and jumping into one. Glen’s twin was the rock in his life and he would turn to her for help and guidance.
When he was little, Glen would frequently ask his mom, “I’m a good boy AM ent I, mom?”
He graduated from Sitka High in 1988 and marched up to get his much deserved diploma with his partner in crime Shayne Odell.
He was a deckhand in his younger days with John Phillips and crewed with Rob Kenney and other close friends. Glen had some challenges in his life that he owned and would proceed with dignity.
“Our hearts are broken that we lost such a loving and caring person but we also celebrate that we had him in our lives,” family members wrote. “Our family will look forward to shared memories from those closest to him.”
Glen’s favorite excursions included hunting, clam digging, fishing and preserving subsistence food. He was thankful for the Alaska life, living off the land and the tradition of sharing.
Glen touched the lives of many and had a heart of gold; he helped many throughout the years. He respected his elders and only grumbled when his sisters gave him too much advice.
He loved music (oldies rock n roll and definitely not country), sharing stories, being Roscoe’s son, and reminiscing about the good old days.
“He also deeply missed his mom, and we are letting go knowing that he will be reunited with Vivi (mom) and the rest of our loved ones,” his family wrote. “We know that one day we all will dance in the heavens together.”
A service is scheduled in Pelican, Aug. 8 at the Community Hall. The family plans to hold a memorial in Yakutat on Aug. 19, and in Sitka at the end of October, after the fishing season.
A celebration of life is planned  in  June 2018, when his ashes will be taken up the Mountain in Pelican.
All friends are welcome to all the services. As Glen would say, “catch lots and be safe.”
At the Pelican service Aug. 8, pallbearers will be Josh Houston, Dennis Houston Jr., Jacob Houston, Jocelyn Jensen, Cody Jensen Jonathan Jensen Jr., and Billy Joe Paddock.
Honorary pallbearers are Clancy Boord, Uncle Bill Paddock, Steve Young, Joseph Paddock, Tom Paddock Jr., Fredrick Martin Mork, William Mork, Keith Mork, Jon Jensen Sr., Dennis Houston Sr., Tara Padon, Shayne Odell, Rob Kenney, Tom Andrews, James Phillips, John Phillips and John “Johnny Boy” Breseman.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to: Roscoe H. Max Jr., P.O. Box 704, Pelican, AK 99832
