Marylyn Burens Conley was born in Evanston, Illinois, on May 5, 1945, the daughter of German immigrants. She grew up in the Chicago area, and attended St. Teresa College in Minnesota, where she majored in biology.
After graduation she met her future husband, Tom, in Chicago. She helped found and volunteered with Women In Safe Homes and the League of Women Voters, and contributed time and funds to various conservation causes in Ketchikan, and with the Sheldon Jackson Museum and various AA causes in Sitka.
She had a lifelong love of classical music, played violin in the Ketchikan Chamber Orchestra, and attended the Sitka Summer Music Festival religiously.
She raised two children, and her hobbies included reading, skiing, redecorating, and tolerating her husband’s frequent practical jokes at her expense.
She died of lung cancer on January 31, 2019, surrounded by friends and family.
She is survived by her daughter Anya, 34, of Sitka, and her son Alex, 43, of Boulder, Colorado.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
