Janet Childress

Janet Mae Childress, a Sitka rsident for more than 40 years, died March 8 at home, in her sleep. She was 77.

As she requested, no services will be held.

She was born March 19, 1934, in Ipswitch, N.D., the daughter of Robert and Helen (Jillston) Hill. When she was a child, her family moved to Bremerton, Wash., where she grew up and graduated from Bremerton High School in 1953.

She and her husband Del came to Sitka from Bremerton in 1960 to work at Sitka Cold Storage. She later worked at Lakeside Grocery for many years, retiring in the late 1990s. She also was employed for two years at Russian Bell  Gift Store (in the Triune Building).

She was active in the Emblem Club,  and was a Supreme member.

Among her enjoyments were cooking, reading magazines and bowling - she and her husband were league members.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 54 years, Del, in  2007; her parents; two sisters, Lois and Roberta; and a grandson, Marcus Brady.

She is survived by her daughters, Debra Harriman of Sisters, Ore.; Diana Brady and her husband Ralph Brady of Sitka; Danijo Pepper and her husband Edward Pepper, Sitka; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many, many friends in Sitka.
