Pauline Helfrich

    Former Sitkan Pauline Carter Winegar Helfrich died March 19, 2012, at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital, Yakima, Wash., surrounded by her family. Memorial Services will be held at a later date.
    She was born Nov. 19, 1934, in Bend, Ore., to Frank and Ethel Carter. She came from a large family was close to her brothers and sisters.
    She worked as a cook for the school district and also in healthcare as a CNA in Sitka for many years. After retiring, she and Jim returned to Prineville, Ore., which allowed them to spend time with their children and grandchildren. She was happiest when she was surrounded by her family.
    Pauline is survived by her children Charles (Susan) Winegar of Minneapolis, Minn., Carrie (David) Risley of Yakima, Wash., Pamela (Brian) Chinell of Sitka, Sherri (Steve) Strand of Clatskanie, Ore., and Donald Helfrich of Sitka, stepdaughter, Diane (Ron) Gillette of Prineville, Ore., 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
    She is also survived by her brothers, Ron Carter and Norman Carter, and sisters, Ruby Erickson and Panzy Hawes.
    She was preceeded in death by her husband James Helfrich and stepson Richard Steven Helfrich and several brothers and sisters.
