August “Auggie” Edward Carlson
August “Auggie” Edward Carlson, 61, passed away Nov. 16, 2013, at SEARHC- Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital as a result of cancer. His family was by was his side.
Services will be held noon Monday, Nov. 25 at the Nazarene Church, followed by a graveside ceremony at Sitka National Cemetery. Afterward, a celebration of life will be at the Moose Lodge. It will be in potluck style.
Auggie was born Aug. 14, 1952, at Sheldon Jackson hospital, the son of Charles A. and Jessie Carlson.
He had many adventures living in a small town, such as hunting, fishing and attending Sitka High School.
After attending Sitka High, he joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 17, and served as a fireman for a two-year period.
Upon his discharge, he returned to Sitka and resumed commercial fishing throughout Southeast. Commercial fishing was his passion and he continued to do so up until this year, even through his illness.
When he wasn’t fishing, he was playing cards, most often with his aunts, Nancy and Edie, and his mother, Jessie. His other favorite pastimes were bingo, pool and hunting.
Auggie was very intertwined in the Sitka community and well-loved by many. He will be dearly missed.
He was an active member of the Sitka Moose Lodge 1350. He served as the governor and was currently acting as the junior governor. He was also a member of the American Legion, Sitka Tribe of Alaska and Tlingit and Haida, as well as a shareholder of Shee Atika and Sealaska.
He is survived by his mother, Jessie Carlson of Sitka; his children, Jason Carlson of Coos Bay, Ore., and Tally Carlson of Hydaburg; two grandchildren, Tyrone and Marc Carlson; and brothers and sisters, Alfred Carlson, Marilee Carlson, Terry Carlson, Cathy Carlson, and Emma Boord.
Also surviving are his aunts Bertha Enger, Pauline Peratrovich, Karen Wallace, Nancy Philips; uncle Calvin Carlson; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles A. Carlson; five siblings; aunts Freda Samuelson, Marie Carlson, Evelyn Hill, Frances Brown, Willa Randall, and Barbara Leask; uncles Bill Hamilton, Bill Hill and Edward Hamilton; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers are Alfred Carlson, Terry Carlson, Steve Kristovich, Gene Natkong, Charlie Skultka, Steve Edenshaw and John Johanson.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Jessie Carlson 105 Bahovec Court, Sitka, AK 99835.
