Alice Evangeline Den Herder
Alice Evangeline Den Herder, 92, died Sunday, Dec. 21, at Sitka Community Hospital with her family by her side.
Alice was born May 2, 1922, in Idaho to Arnold and Bertha Waller.
Alice grew up in Idaho and Washington. She enjoyed playing the violin in the orchestra at her high school.
During World War II, she worked for the U.S. Army in payroll as a civilian employee.
On Dec. 6, 1945, Alice married Albert Den Herder, the love of her life. They raised their three children in Washington, Oregon, California, Alaska and Oklahoma. In 1961 they moved to Sitka for Bert’s work as a logger and left in 1964. In 1972 they returned to Alaska and lived in Petersburg where they owned and operated Viking Marine. In 1981 they moved to Sitka, which was their home for the rest of their lives.
Alice faithfully served God her whole adult life. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, painting and poetry. She often sold her knitted and crocheted items at the local bazaars with Bert, her sister, Bea, or her grandchildren by her side.
Her family felt much loved by her, and she was a very special person to all who spent time with her.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Bert, who passed away Dec. 22, 2011, and her daughter, Linda (Den Herder) Hansen.
Alice is survived by her sister, Bea Vance of Puyallup, Wash.; sons, Steve (Dorothy) Den Herder and Gary (Debbie) Den Herder, all of Sitka; grandchildren, David Den Herder, Lori Swain, Denise Den Herder, Rhonda Gibler, Laren Hansen, Marcus Hansen, Lisa Zbylski, Jake Den Herder and Donna Den Herder; great-grandchildren, Reagan, Kaylee, Murray, Leilynn, Brayden, Trek, Elshaday, Milo and Darren; and many nieces and nephews.
