Dies in Texas
Frances Beth Mitchell, 94, of Lubbock, Texas, passed away in Lubbock on Dec. 27, 2015.
Although of Texas, Beth had close ties to Sitka. Her daughter and son-in-law Sandra and Jack Griffith and granddaughter Tonya moved here in 1979, and Beth has made more than 60 trips to Sitka-by-the-Sea since then. She loved Sitka and all of her Sitka family friends through all the years she visited.
Beth enjoyed beachcombing, whale-watching, and fishing and exploring the entire road system from end to end. On one trip, out to the Fortress of the Bear, she was allowed to feed the bears an apple. She could hardly wait to tell her Texas friends.
Beth loved the Northern Lights glowing with the Big Dipper and the Rockwell Lighthouse, and especially enjoyed Christmas at the Log Cabin because Santa’s first stop was Alaska.
She is survived by her children Wesley Rhea Mitchell of Lubbock and Sandra Griffith of Sitka and Maui, Hawaii; grandchildren Tonya Renee Griffith of Stevensville, Mont.; Gregory Rhea Mitchell of Doylestown, Pa.; and Preston Mitchell of Manassas, Va.; and six great-grandchildren.
