Sitka High Rallies to Beat Falcons, Twice

By TOM HESSE

The Sitka High softball team took two of three in a series against the conference-leading Thunder Mountain Falcons this past weekend.

Sitka came from behind to win each of their conference games at the Kimsham softball complex, keeping the Wolves in the mix for a state tournament berth.
Juneau’s Thunder Mountain led 5-2 heading into the top of the third inning of Friday’s game. Sitka scored 4 runs on three hits in the bottom half of the inning to go up 6-5.
Hailey Denkinger started off the inning with a walk and advanced on a bunt from Tatum Bayne. Zoe Krupa drove in the first run of the inning with a base hit to right field.
Ashlyne Miller then drove in Bayne and Krupa with a 2-run single that tied the game at 5.
Emily Young drove in the final run of the inning to give Sitka a 6-5 lead.
Thunder Mountain responded in the top of the fourth inning with 2 runs on two hits, but in the bottom of the fourth Sitka got the lead right back.
Trailing 7-6, Sitka senior Meghan Way singled to right field. Minh Iwamoto followed with a bunt single and Denkinger drove in Way to tie the game at 7. Krupa then gave the Wolves the go-ahead run, and the eventual 8-7 win, on a sac-fly RBI.
Krupa held Thunder Mountain scoreless for the next three innings. The junior threw a complete game allowing 6 earned runs on six hits and striking out four batters.
Sitka coach Caitlin Henke said the team is playing its best softball at this point in the season.
“They were really well focused. They handled each play as it came and I was really impressed with just their teamwork and their intensity,” Henke said.
Thunder Mountain pitcher Taylor Beardslee allowed 3 earned runs on 7 hits with four strikeouts.
In the first game of Saturday’s double-header Krupa again went the distance in another comeback win for the Wolves.
The game was scoreless heading into the top of the third inning when Thunder Mountain’s Maxie Saceda-Hurt drove in 2 runs on a two-out single.

Sitka evened the score in the bottom of the inning when Way hit a 2-RBI base hit. Sitka took its first lead of the game in the fourth inning on a two-out single to left field by Denkinger that scored a run, giving the Wolves a 3-2 lead.
The Wolves added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning but in the top of the sixth Beardslee drove in 2 runs for the Falcons to tie the game at 4. Thunder Mountain’s Makayla Harp singled to right field in the top of the seventh inning to score a run and put Thunder Mountain ahead 5-4.
Sitka won the game in walk-off fashion in the bottom half of the inning. Bayne bunted her way to first base and Way singled to put runners on first and second. Both advanced on a steal, setting up Miller to drive in the tying run with a single to right-center field.
Way then scored on a throwing error, giving Sitka the 6-5 win.
Krupa finished the game allowing 4 earned runs on 13 hits with three strikeouts. Beardslee allowed 3 earned runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts.
Sitka hit well throughout the lineup, something that Henke said has been a focus lately.
“We’ve been working really hard. We’ve put a lot of time in the batting cage in the mornings and that’s paying off,” she said.
Thunder Mountain took the final game of the series 7-5 Saturday afternoon. That game did not count against the conference record.
Whitney McArthur pitched a complete game for Sitka High, recording two strikeouts over 7 innings of work and allowing 6 earned runs on 18 hits.
The Wolves wrap up the regular season this weekend in Ketchikan. By sweeping Thunder Mountain in the conference games this weekend, Sitka kept in the race for a state tournament berth. If the Wolves sweep Ketchikan on the road this weekend and get some help from Juneau-Douglas they can jump into the top two of the region, Henke said.
“We are still in it for state, so this may not be the last weekend for us. We just need to take it a game at a time and we’ll see what happens,” she said.
The top two teams in Region V get a berth to the state tournament hosted in Fairbanks.
