Tim Fulton Resigns From School Board

By BRIELLE SCHAEFFER

Sentinel Staff Writer

Tim Fulton, who has been on the Sitka School Board since 2008, has announced his resignation.

“As you may or may not know I have an opportunity to help my aging parents remain in their home during these later years of their life,” Fulton said in a letter of resignation that is in the agenda packet for the board’s meeting tonight.

“As important as my work on the School Board is, I believe that caring for my parents takes precedence,” Fulton said in the letter.

Fulton, who is the current president of the board, said his resignation will be effective Sept. 1.

The resignation comes too late to have the vacancy filled in the Oct. 4 city election. Instead, the other members of the board will select a replacement who will serve until the 2017 city election

Tonight’s meeting will be the board’s first since its summer recess. The school district staff is recommending that the board solicit letters of interest in the one-year board appointment until Sept. 21, and hold interviews on Sept. 27.

“They say being on the School Board is a thankless job, but this community, our dedicated staff and our amazing students have shown me their appreciation in so many ways,” Fulton wrote in his resignation letter. “The Sitka School District has seen many changes over the course of my time on the board and it’s easy to see many more challenges on  the horizon. I trust that the board will continue to operate with  respect for each other, listening to the community to develop good policy that is based in local preferences and above all else make their decisions based on what is best for every student to achieve success.”

At tonight’s meeting the board also will consider a resolution in support of raising property taxes because of the state’s budget crisis. A proposition is to be on the ballot to raise the property tax cap to 8 mills. If it passes, the Assembly will have the authority to raise the tax, presently 6 mills, within that limit.
