Two Apply for Interim Seat On School Board
By BRIELLE SCHAEFFER
Sentinel Staff Writer
The Sitka School Board has received two applications to fill its vacant seat.
Jennifer Carter, an instructor at Sitka Fine Arts Camp, and Brent Edwards, a stay-at-home dad, have submitted letters of interest, district staff said. The application period for the appointment closes at 4 p.m. Friday.
The position became open when former School Board president Tim Fulton submitted his resignation, effective Sept. 1. The resignation came too late for the opening to be placed on the Oct. 4 election ballot.
The School Board will make the appointment, and the person selected will serve until the city election in October 2017.
“We’re hoping to have anyone who is interested will put their name in to be considered,” School District Superintendent Mary Wegner said.
Last year, the School Board had a similar process to fill a position and there was “a mad rush” before the deadline, with seven people submitting interest letters, Wegner said. She would like to see that happen again, she said.
Last year’s choice for the interim appointment was Jennifer McNichol, who is running for a full three-year term this year.
“I appreciate the community’s dedication to our students,” Wegner said.
The School Board will hold interviews with applicants at a special meeting Tuesday in the district office boardroom.
For additional information call the superintendent’s Office at 747-8622.
