Tuesday Events Top Sitka’s Alaska Day

By Sentinel Staff

After a weekend filled with Alaska Day Festival activities, Sitka is ready for the main events of Alaska Day itself.

That will include the parade followed by the re-enactment of the Oct. 18, 1867, ceremony on Castle Hill transferring Alaska claims from Russia to the United States. This is the 149th anniversary of that event.

Activities over the weekend included the  Variety Show Friday night, the Alaska Day Ball on Saturday, the Alaska Day Biathlon on Sunday, with side events such as the Sitka Historical Society annual meeting Thursday night; a Marine Safety Fair, a Whitmore Hall reception and self-guided history tour, and a Sheldon Jackson Museum reception Saturday.

Events today include the New Archangel Dancers end-of-season performance, at 6:30 p.m. at Centennial Hall. A state legislative candidates forum will be at 6:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center.

Among Alaska Day visitors will be U.S. Senate candidates, Lisa Murkowski and Margaret Stock;and a Russian film crew that plans to get footage of the transfer ceremony on Castle Hill, Festival Chairman Ted Allio said.

Several military guests will be here as well, along with a festival mainstay, the Seattle Firefighters Pipe and Drum band, which always drums up some fun.

The 9th Army Band will be here, but with only seven members, a result of restructuring. It’s now divided between Fort Wainwright (Fairbanks) and Joint Base Elmerdorf-Richardson (Anchorage),

preventing the previous level of Alaska Day support, which included playing for the Alaska Day Ball and marching in the parade.

For the memorial service at Sitka National Cemetery, the band will provide a drummer and bugler to join the U.S. Army Alaska Command Chaplain (LTC) Greg Thogmartin, and color guard firing detail from 17th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion. And a band brass quintet will provide ceremonial music on Castle Hill for the transfer ceremony.

Here’s the lineup for Alaska Day:

Tuesday, Oct. 18

– Alaska Day Book Sale, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Sitka Public Library
