Blood Drive

Set for Friday

The Sitka Blood Drive will continue 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at Centennial Hall in Room 1.

Walk-ins are welcome prior to 2 p.m.

Tips for a successful donation include: drinking plenty of fluids; avoiding beverages with caffeine and alcohol, which tend to constrict blood vessels; eating a well-balanced meal; and avoiding nicotine products one hour before donating.

Photo identification is needed. The donation process takes up to an hour and three recipients can be helped at a time.

 

Volunteers Sought

For Kids Carnival

Blatchley Middle School is seeking parent volunteers for its annual Blatchley Kids Carnival on Saturday, Oct. 29.

Help is needed 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and noon to 2:30 p.m. Call Kari Sagel at 752-7323 to help out.

Baked goods are also needed as a donation to the event.

 

VBS Oct. 21-23 at

Salvation Army

A weekend vacation Bible school for those in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade is slated Oct. 21-23 at the Salvation Army.

‘‘Pets Unleashed, Where Jesus Cares ‘Fur’ You’’ will include crafts, games and prizes, Bible lessons, and ‘‘more dog-gone fun than you can imagine,’’ the Salvation Army said.

A missions team will be on hand to help with the event. All are invited to the free VBS.

Hours are 6-9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday.

Alaska Day Parade

Winners Announced

After receiving the anonymous judges’ report, Alaska Day Festival organizers have made the following awards of $150, $100 and $50, respectively, for entries in the annual parade held Tuesday afternoon.

–Civilian marching unit: first,                Blatchley Middle School Band; second, Seattle Firefighters Pipes and Drums; and third, Sitka High School Band.

–Military marching unit: first,                U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Sitka; second, USCG Cutter Maple; and third, U.S. Army Color Guard.

–Symbolic of 1867 Period: first,                Sitka Ninth Infantry; second, Russian-American Colony Singers; and third,              Festival Greeters and Re-enactors.

–Organization entry: first, Sitka Studio of Dance; second, Athabaskan Dancers from Mt. Edgecumbe High School; and third, 4-H Club.

–Theme award “Celebrating Nursing in the Last Frontier”: first, Sitka Community Hospital – Early Nurses; second, Sitka Volunteer Fire Department Old Truck with Nurse; third,              Sitka Community Hospital Long-Term Care.

–Business Entry: first, Baranof Island Brewing Co.; second, Wells Fargo; and third, Sea Mart.

 

Appreciation is extended to all who participated in the parade and the spectators who cheered them on. GCI  is thanked for underwriting the parade awards, Alaska Day Committee volunteers said.

‘Explain Pain’

Class Oct. 26

The public is invited to attend a free “Explain Pain” class 6-8 p.m.  Wednesday, Oct. 26, at the Sitka Community Hospital classroom.

Bridget Hitchcock, PT, will teach the physiology of chronic pain and how to manage it. Research shows that understanding can help lessen one’s pain. For more information, call 747-1771.

Health Seminar

Series Continues

The One Health Seminar Series, a series of biomedical health seminars at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, continues 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24.

The lecture will be streamed live at UAS-Sitka Campus in Room 106. The event will be hosted by Dr. Paul Bahna, biology professor at UAS-Sitka. 

 

Professors Marit and Halvor Hoveid from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology will be presenting “Collaborations between diverse cultures – one or many healths? Two educationalists perspectives on collaboration and interdisciplinary approaches.”

Responding to the requests of athletes, coaches and parents, the Sitka School Board voted unanimously Monday against a proposal that would have changed Sitka High School’s classification from Class 4A, which includes Juneau and Ketchikan, to the 3A, which has schools with enrollment of 100 to 400 students.

50 YEARS AGO

April 1974

Memories of Sitka’s first radio station have been revived by a St. Louis, Mo., man who was one of the founders. Fred A. Wiethuchter recently wrote a letter to “Mayor Sitka, Alaska” asking about the town since he was here during World War II. He was an Army private at Fort Ray when he was attached to Armed Services Radio Station KRAY and WVCX ....
