November 28, 2016 Police Blotter

The following calls were received by Sitka police by 8 a.m. today:

Nov. 25

A bear got into garbage and spread it in the Andrew Hope neighborhood.

Keys were turned in.

A Honda key was turned in from Harbor Drive.

Police told a man waiting for a bus and his brother, who was waiting for a taxi, to stay away from each other for the day after one of them complained about the other at Crescent Harbor.

At 1:44 p.m. a caller said kids appeared to be doing drugs at the block house. Officers found no one there.

A caller said about 70 gallons of fuel was stolen from a Wolff Drive tank.

A caller said a friend’s girlfriend was out of control and the friend wanted her to leave. Police issued a trespass warning to the girlfriend and the man was advised on a protective order.

At 7:30 p.m. a woman said her husband had gone to the neighbor’s house to complain about noise and hadn’t returned. She called back around 8 to say he was back at home.

At 9 p.m. a church worker said an intoxicated man had been allowed to hang out during the day but now should be going home. The man was deemed able to care for himself, and he left.

A hospital asked police to pick up a woman who had been drinking. Police drive her to a place for her to stay.

At 11:40 p.m. warned young drivers spinning donuts in an Audi at the Keet ballfields. They were also advised of curfew rules.

 

Nov. 26

Police scared a bear away from Andrew Hope Drive, and stood by while the owner picked up the spilled trash .

At 2 a.m. police stood by while the owner of garbage strewn by a bear on Rudolph Walton Circle picked it up.

An ambulance was called after a woman passed out on Biorka Street.

At 4 a.m. police issued disorderly conduct warnings to intoxicated people  being loud on Burkhart Street.

Another complaint for the same complex came in at 4:20 a.m. and a woman was given a warning.

A man said he had returned a call and received a voicemail that said he had reached the police department. “If you have any information regarding any risky business please leave a message and I’ll get back to you,” the message said. The man who had recorded the misleading voicemail message was advised to change it. He said it had been done as a joke, and he would change it.

Juneau police asked for assistance.

An ambulance was called for a girl.

A backpack was found in the 200 block of Katlian Street.

Nov. 27

At 1:31 a.m. an Andrew Hope resident reported an overturned container.

At 2:20 p.m. a bear was seen trying to get into garbage on Indian River Road. Officers helped the owner clean up trash after scaring the bear away. It returned at 3:47 a.m.

At 1:20 p.m. a woman was reported hit by a vehicle on the Nelson Logging Road. An ambulance was called.

At 2:16 p.m. an intoxicated man in a food court was taken into protective custody. A trespass form was signed.

Police investigated an assault report, and after finding no assault occurred provided the caller with his options.

An assault was reported at Thomsen Harbor around 3:15 p.m.

Police talked to a store manager about signing a criminal trespass form against a customer.

At 10:40 p.m. an ambulance was called for an intoxicated man in the road in the 1300 block of SMC.

Nov. 28

At 1:50 a.m. officers saw in closed caption cameras someone unloading or loading items at a construction site. they found it was a worker, and there was no problem.

A bear was seen in the 700 block of Indian River Road, trying to get into garbage at 2:45 a.m. The bear was gone when officers checked.

 

Sitka Police

Donny Wells, 21, was charged Sunday afternoon with assault in the fourth degree, domestic violence.

Tarja R. Hartshorn, 24, was charged Sunday with violating release conditions for allegedly failing to show up for her court ordered breath test.

 

Emergency Calls

The Sitka Fire Department dispatched ambulances at 12:23 and 3:35 p.m. Friday; 2:50 a.m., 9:37 a.m. and 6:43 p.m. Saturday; and 6:19 a.m., 1:18 p.m. and 10:49 p.m. Sunday.

At 3:14 p.m. Sunday a fire truck was sent to the 400 block of Katlian Street on a fuel spill in the channel. The fire department didn’t find the source of the spill, and turned the case over to the Coast Guard, the fire hall said.

 

In Court

Tye L. Finkbeiner, 36, was ordered to serve three days for violating probation.

A petition to revoke probation filed against Francis L. Brantley, 30, was withdrawn.

 

Grand Jury 

Alex S. Robinson, 27, was indicted Wednesday by a Sitka grand jury on seven charges of forgery in the second degree, a class C felony. He allegedly cashed seven checks, between $200 and $467, belonging to someone else, court records said.

 

Coast Guard

The Coast Guard Air Station Sitka helicopter picked up a hunter in good condition Friday evening in the North Glass Peninsula, near Ketchikan.

 

The Coast Guard said the man had become separated from the rest of his party and was overdue. He was found Friday evening. The helicopter landed, picked up the hunter and took him to Ketchikan. He didn’t need any medical care, the Coast Guard said.

Michael Stringer, environmental specialist for Sitka Tribe of Alaska and a founder of the community garden, takes the concept of Earth Week literally. This weekend he hopes others will share his appreciation for “earth” and things growing in it by joining him in preparing the community garden just behind Blatchley Middle School for another growing season.
