Lutherans Offer
Advent Concert
On Kessler Organ
Karen Bretz will play a one-hour concert of seasonal Advent music at the historic 1844 Kessler organ at Sitka Lutheran Church, noon Friday, Dec. 9.
Bretz is the organist at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Anchorage.
Advent is the church’s time of preparing for Christ’s birth. The concert will focus on this reflective theme and include Advent hymns such as “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming” and “In the Bleak Midwinter.” Bretz will also play a characteristic French Christmas noël and a chorale fantasia by Dietrich Buxtehude that tells the Christmas story in music.
In the Lutheran organ concert tradition, the audience will be asked to sing, accompanied by organ. To be sung is a German hymn called “By Gracious Powers So Wonderfully Sheltered.” Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the anti-Nazi martyr, wrote the text.
The Kessler organ was manufactured in Estonia in 1844 and shipped to Sitka in 1846. It’s a five-stop tracker organ with a single manual and no pedal board, and is likely the oldest existing pipe organ west of the Mississippi River.
The concert is free and all are welcome. Bretz can be contacted at 351-6591 or kbretz@alaska.net.
