Police Blotter

The following calls were received by Sitka police by 8 a.m. today:

Dec. 5

Possible charges of assault in the fourth degree were forwarded to the DA’s office, related to an incident in the 300 block of Lincoln Street.

At 11:30 a.m. an employee asked police to remove an intoxicated man from a restaurant. The man registered a breath test of .335 and was taken to the hospital. He was given a criminal trespass warning, and told to stay out of bars and liquor stores for the day.

A caller complained about vehicles parked along the roadway on Anna Drive, causing a hazard.

A guardian said a child being cared for had skipped school and hadn’t returned by 1:20 p.m. The guardian said it was protocol to call police when such incidents occurred.

Police reviewed a probation violation report and determined there was no violation.

A near-accident was reported at 3:30 p.m. at Katlian Street and HPR. Police said they would talk to the driver.

Police provided a resident with options for dealing with a domestic violence issue.

At 4:40 p.m. police talked to a driver who was in the middle of HPR. He explained he was avoiding pedestrians who were in the roadway because snow was keeping them off the sidewalks.

At 6:10 p.m. sparks were seen coming off the top of a power pole at HPR and Marine Street.

A request to remove a woman from a private residence was canceled after the woman left on her own.

A resident said she was being harassed by a man at a grocery store. He was given a criminal trespass warning.

Police checked on a report that a girl had been almost injured by her mother, but the girl said nothing had happened. Officers noted the mother had been drinking.

Emergency workers said a patient who had asked for an ambulance wanted a ride for her service dog as well. The medical director said only the patient would be allowed in the ambulance.

Dec. 6

Officers were unable to respond to a report at 12:44 a.m. that a bear was dragging garbage on Katherine Benson Street. The bear was seen again at 2:05 a.m. on Rudolph Walton Circle.

At 5:10 a.m. a resident said he drove his vehicle accidentally into a ditch on Granite Creek Road. Police noted no damage and said it was not a hazard.

Emergency Calls

The Sitka Fire Department dispatched ambulances on 12 reports of medical emergencies on Monday, and four by press time today.

At 7:15 p.m. Monday a fire truck was sent to Blatchley Middle School after a power blip triggered an alarm.

In Court

Lawrence G. Johnson Jr., 42, was sentenced to 24 months, with 12 suspended, for misconduct involving a controlled substance in the second degree. He is to be on probation for three years. Two counts of unlawful contact and misconduct involving a controlled substance in the second degree were dismissed. He will be on probation for three years.

A petition to revoke probation was withdrawn against Leonard C. Watts Jr., 48.

Chelsey N. Lyons, 22, was found to have violated conditions of probation, and was ordered to serve five days under her suspended imposition of sentence.

Shammar Ferguson, 33, was sentenced to 23 months on a charge of conspiracy to commit misconduct involving a controlled substance in the second degree. A second charge of the same crime was dismissed.

Michael Stringer, environmental specialist for Sitka Tribe of Alaska and a founder of the community garden, takes the concept of Earth Week literally. This weekend he hopes others will share his appreciation for “earth” and things growing in it by joining him in preparing the community garden just behind Blatchley Middle School for another growing season.
