Grapplers Ready for Regions
By BRIELLE SCHAEFFER

This coming weekend is the pinnacle of two months of practice and competition for Sitka High and Mt. Edgecumbe wrestlers – the Region V Wrestling Championships.
The tournament will determine how many athletes get to go to state.
“The whole season is a buildup to regions,” Sitka Coach Jim Giampa said. “The guys are really excited to get after it and start wrestling when it actually counts.”
All things considered, the Sitka Wolves team is looking very strong. At the Tom Sims Invitational in Wrangell last weekend, Dec. 2-3, the team had six first place finishes. Kyle England, Curt Bartlett, JD Gagner, Caleb Suarez, Kyler Sumauang and Joshua Goeden were all No. 1 in their respective weight classes.
The team came in third place overall out of 15 teams, getting narrowly edged out by Mt. Edgecumbe High School, which came in second.
Giampa said he is looking forward to the regional competition.
“We have a lot of potential,” he said. “We have a good team that is wrestling really well right now. I could potentially take over half my team to state.”
The Braves wrestling team had a fun yet stressful time in Wragell, Coach Mike Kimber said.
“The storm hit and part of what happened is the storm knocked out our cell phones,” he said, which complicated travel plans. “It was hard to get a hold of everyone we needed to.”
Half the region didn’t even make it to the tournament because of the weather, he said, which sort of worked in the team’s favor.
“We had finalists we normally wouldn’t get because people were gone,” he said.
Three Braves ended up in first place – Pamela Bean, Caden Peterson and Sydnee Kimber.
Kimber has high hopes for regions.
“The last few weeks we’ve definitely improved our performance quite a bit so we are looking to continue on with that,” he said. “We want to get as many state qualifiers as possible. If my kids perform as well as they should it will be a nail biter.”
Regions start Friday at Mt. Edgecumbe High School (see schedule sidebar).
