Wolves Best Braves in Opener

For a fan, Tuesday night’s Sitka versus Mt. Edgecumbe boys basketball game at Sitka High was exciting. A nail biter.

But for a coach the 77-72 Wolves over Braves contest was totally nerve wracking.
“There were a lot of turnovers for both sides,” Mt. Edgecumbe High School coach Archie Young said.
“It’s early in the season so there are going to be a lot of mistakes,” he said. “From a coach’s standpoint you’d like to see those things cleaned up.”
It was the first time the rival basketball teams have met this season.
With 7 seconds left in the game, Sitka High School freshman Gavin Flores tied up the score with 3-pointer, sending play into overtime.
“It was a very competitive game from start to finish,” Young said.
Although the Braves ultimately lost Young said there were lots of “teachable moments” from the game.
“We need to work on making better choices in game situations,” he said.
A highlight of the game for Young was sophomore player Emmett Dunaway, who was the team’s second top scorer with 11 points.
“I liked him defensively, I liked how he rebounded,” Young said. “The way he played is how we needed to play. I was very pleased with his effort.”
Paul Bioff sank the most shots for the Braves with 30 points total. Shawn Williams had 7 points, Ermogen Merculief had 7, Isaiah Rexford had 5 and Ronnie Brown got 3.
For Sitka, Jesse Lantiegne scored 21 points. Flores scored 16, Steve Schmitt had 15, Marjo Vidad had 12. CJ Taccad had 7 points and Oliver Moore-Baker garnered 5 points. Adeon Dumag scored 1.
The schools’ C and JV teams also played Tuesday. The Wolves JV team beat the Braves 52-28, and in the C-team matchup Sitka won 56-32.
