TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. The fire hall received the call about the fire at 5:33 p.m., and one fire engine with eight firefighters and an ambulance were dispatched, he said. (Sentinel Photo by James Poulson)

Delta Western Joins
Salmon Derby Donors
With a $2,000 cash donation, Delta Western Petroleum has pledged its support for the Sitka Salmon Derby set for May 27-28-29 and June 3-4 by Sitka Sportsman’s Association.
Donations of prizes to be awarded to successful anglers for derby kings can still be added to the donor listings and other publicity. Local businesses, organizations and individuals can pledge certificates toward cost of goods or services or cash amounts. New contributors are asked to mail pledges to Sitka Sportsman’s Association, PO Box 3030, Sitka, or phone Derby Chairman John McCrehin at 738-8636, or Prize Coordinator Elaine Strelow at 747-3469, or SSA President Steve Ramp at 738-7267.

Those who have lost a spouse or partner and would like to get together with others who share this loss are invited to join an informal gathering 6 p.m. Thursday, April 27, in the Pioneers Home manager’s house. Erin Matthes, a grief counselor from Braveheart, has volunteered to get the group started and is willing to continue if the gathering chooses to meet again and wants the same format. “It may have been a decade or just a few months but we might find comfort in talking with others in similar circumstances,” said an organizer, Linda Olson. Businesses using the Centennial Hall parking lot testified Tuesday against a proposal to charge them rent in addition to the $200 annual permit fee. City Administrator Hugh Bevan made the proposal in response to the Assembly’s direction to Centennial Hall manager Don Kluting to try to close the $340,000 gap between building revenues and operational costs.
