TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. The fire hall received the call about the fire at 5:33 p.m., and one fire engine with eight firefighters and an ambulance were dispatched, he said. (Sentinel Photo by James Poulson)

Wolves Sweep Kay-Hi Kings

The Sitka Wolves soccer team swept the Ketchikan High School Kings in two challenging matches this weekend at Krueger Field.
Sitka won 3-1 on Friday and 2-0 on Saturday.

“The series was hard fought until the very end – all of our players reached new plateaus in their performance,” Head Coach Eric Van Cise said.
Van Cise and Co-Coach Dennis DeWinter said they witnessed the team’s finest performance in its nine-year history.
“Both games we won 50/50 balls, utilized our flanks, exercised patience and executed our set plays as we have practiced,” Van Cise said.
Friday’s game had a robust start for the Wolves, as they were two goals up going into halftime. Center midfielder Bryce DeWinter knocked the two goals into the net.
Left midfielder Ethan Pike scored the third goal in the second half for a 3-1 finish, the coach said.
On Saturday, KayHi came out strong, holding Sitka to just 1 goal in the first half. Left wing Ibrahm Nyiti, an exchange student from Tanzania, found the net after an assist from striker Megan Christner.
“It took us a bit to find our groove,” Van Cise said. “Ketchikan traveled with only two subs and they worked us hard.”
The second half found Bryce DeWinter on-frame with a goal to bring the score to 2-0.
Van Cise was extremely grateful to city grounds supervisor Shawn McLeod and his crew for keeping Krueger Field in excellent condition. He said there were two factors in his team’s win – his player’s performance and the field’s condition.
“For years, Shawn and his crew have nurtured the natural turf at Krueger Field,’” he said. “The weather and turf conditions were in perfect alignment that provided the premium platform for soccer.”
The Wolves travel to Juneau this week for a series against Thunder Mountain.

Businesses using the Centennial Hall parking lot testified Tuesday against a proposal to charge them rent in addition to the $200 annual permit fee. City Administrator Hugh Bevan made the proposal in response to the Assembly’s direction to Centennial Hall manager Don Kluting to try to close the $340,000 gap between building revenues and operational costs.
