TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. The following calls were received by Sitka police by 8 a.m. today:
April 24
A caller said a woman claiming the caller’s son had done something wrong was making threats. Police left the woman a message that the caller wanted no more contact with her.
A small black dog with a “hippie bandana” was reported missing. It ended up returning home on its own.
A dog in a car with rolled-up windows, parked on Monastery Street, was reported panting hard. The dog’s owner returned and said she had been away longer than she expected. The dog was fine, an officer said.
A caller said she needed help getting her belongings back from her brother. She was advised of her options, and told it is a civil issue.
A BLU cell phone was found in the restroom at city hall. Its owner is at the police station daily and can pick it up.
A Lincoln Street traffic accident was documented at 12:25 p.m.
A two-vehicle accident was reported at Lake and Verstovia streets. The driver was charged.
A resident said a caller told her she had won $100,000 and she had sent in about $11,500 in fees to collect her prize. The caller was now asking for another $10,000. Police documented the case as a fraud.
A resident reported a caller named Ramon said he’d been hired to paint a trailer in the neighborhood. The resident said he wasn’t the one who wanted it painted, and called the number Ramon had to talk to the person who’d hired Ramon. However, the number didn’t connect to anyone.
A backpack was found at the library and will be disposed of if not claimed by May 1. A wallet also was found.
A woman with a head injury and still bleeding didn’t want an ambulance, she told officers. A friend agreed to keep an eye on her for the night.
A cell phone found at Blatchley field was turned in.

Tommy Svilar, 21, was remanded Monday by the adult probation officer for allegedly violating his felony probation by testing positive for opiates.
Adam W. Avila, 41, was arrested Monday on a Soldotna trooper warrant charging him with failing to appear for his arraignment on a theft charge. He was also arrested on felony driving under the influence, and failing to have a driver’s license.

Sitka Fire Department dispatched ambulances at 9:54 a.m., 1:08 p.m. and 1:57 p.m. Monday.

Businesses using the Centennial Hall parking lot testified Tuesday against a proposal to charge them rent in addition to the $200 annual permit fee. City Administrator Hugh Bevan made the proposal in response to the Assembly’s direction to Centennial Hall manager Don Kluting to try to close the $340,000 gap between building revenues and operational costs.
