TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. The fire hall received the call about the fire at 5:33 p.m., and one fire engine with eight firefighters and an ambulance were dispatched, he said. (Sentinel Photo by James Poulson)

Hikers will learn about discovering hidden caches while exploring and take an easy 1- to 2-mile hike on the Cross Trail. Participants/parents and guardians should take a smart phone with a downloaded geocache app to participate. Also, kids should take a trinket or two in exchange for a “treasure” they may discover in the cache. Hike length will depend on the interest level of the group. Water bottles are to be taken.
Cross Trail Bike Ride - 9 a.m. May 27. Take your bike to the Indian River Trail parking lot for a group ride hosted by Sitka Trail Works and the Bike Friendly Coalition. This free, guided 10-mile round trip follows Cross Trail over moderate to strenuous hilly terrain to Kramer Avenue and back.

You’ll see ammunition bunkers, and machine gun platforms. If you intend to go inside the bunkers, you’ll need a flashlight or headlamp. Water and a snack suggested.
Hikes that begin at trailheads on the Sitka Road system are offered to the public free of charge. Tickets are required for any off-island hikes and include marine transportation expenses. More information and trail descriptions are available at www.sitkatrailworks.org or by calling 747-7244.

GIRLS ON THE GO
This Week in Girls on the Run
Girls on the Run is an empowerment-based program for girls in 3rd-5th grade, currently in its ninth season at Keet Gooshi Heen Elementary School! GOTR is more than an after-school activity; it is a program designed to bring girls together with strength and resilience and prepare them for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living.
Recently, GOTR participants have been learning about gossip and bullies. Girls learned that gossip is like squeezing toothpaste out of a tube — you can’t put it back in once it’s been said. Teams talked about breaking gossip chains, different types of bullying, and how to deal with bullies. Girls explored why people bully and how to use the Stop and Take a BrThRR (pronounced “breather” and stands for Breathe, Think, Respond, and Review) strategy to stand up for themselves or for someone else. Here’s what participants said about gossip and bullies:
– “(People may bully) because they might be jealous of you or someone else.”
– “Gossiping is something that somebody tells another person and it’s either a lie or something they don’t know is true.”
– “If someone started bullying me, I would tell her “I don’t like it when you do that.”
– “Gossiping can be very rude and I don’t want to be gossiping.”
Throughout this season, GOTR has been providing the Sitka community with updates. We also hope to give mentors and parents an opportunity to pass on skills from GOTR to the youths in your life! Here are some conversation starters for talking with kids about these topics.
*What are some reasons why people bully others?
*If someone is bullying you by spreading a rumor about you or someone else, what would you do?
*Have you or any of your friends at school ever experienced bullying? What happened?
*Who are three adults you could talk to if you were ever being bullied?
Girls on the Run is brought to you in Sitka by Girls on the Run of Greater Alaska and Sitkans Against Family Violence. Call 747-3370 or see our website, safv.org, for more information.
