TRUCK FIRE – Firefighters knock down a fire in a Ford Explorer truck in Arrowhead Trailer Park in the 1200 block of Sawmill Creek Road Saturday evening. One person received fire-related injuries and was taken to the hospital, Sitka Fire Department Chief Craig Warren said, and the truck was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Warren said. The fire hall received the call about the fire at 5:33 p.m., and one fire engine with eight firefighters and an ambulance were dispatched, he said. (Sentinel Photo by James Poulson)

Wolves Go 2-1 Against Juneau
By Sentinel Sports
The Sitka High Wolves varsity softball team struggled in games against Juneau-Douglas High Crimson Bears Friday night and Saturday afternoon before claiming victory in the third matchup.
The team lost 6-3 on Friday and 13-11 Saturday afternoon before winning 13-3 in the final game Saturday.
“The varsity team played well in spots,” Head Coach Bob Potrzuski said.

The game on Friday was “very competitive.”
In the first game Saturday, the Wolves came out swinging, building a 9-2 lead before “a furious comeback by Juneau-Douglas in extra innings.”
“The varsity finally broke through in the third game of the weekend,” he said.
The softball players have made big strides from their first games of the season in Kodiak, Potrzuski said.
“The hitting improved, led by Zoe Krupa, Calista Gallant and Ashlynne Miller, while Gallant and Abby Forrester flashed real effort in the outfield,” he said.
In a dramatic play, Forrester caught a ball in the outfield while crashing through the center field fence.
“Whitney McArthur and Miah Dumag pitched very well over the course of the weekend,” Potrzuski said.
The games wouldn’t be possible without parent support. Pam Young ran the concession stand, which is a major team fundraiser, he said, and Rich Krupa transformed the baseball field into a softball diamond.
“City staff were extremely helpful in making this softball weekend happen, too,” he said.
The junior varsity softball team won both games on Friday by wide margins against Juneau but lost on Saturday, Potrzuski said.
The Wolves host Thunder Mountain High School in games this weekend. On Friday, JV plays at 3 p.m. before varsity takes the field at 5 and 7 p.m.
On Saturday, JV plays at 10 a.m. and varsity plays at noon.

Businesses using the Centennial Hall parking lot testified Tuesday against a proposal to charge them rent in addition to the $200 annual permit fee. City Administrator Hugh Bevan made the proposal in response to the Assembly’s direction to Centennial Hall manager Don Kluting to try to close the $340,000 gap between building revenues and operational costs.
