UAS to Hold
Commencement
The University of Alaska Southeast, Sitka Campus 2017 commencement ceremony will be 7 p.m. Friday, May 5, in room 229. A reception will follow in the atrium.

Park to Begin Summer Hours
Sitka National Historical Park will begin summer hours Sunday, April 30. The Visitor Center will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ranger-led interpretive programs will be held daily, with topics focusing on the stories and legends of the totem poles, the Battle of 1804, sea otter ecology and other aspects of the park’s natural and cultural history.
The Russian Bishop’s House will be open daily 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Ranger-led programs of the upstairs residence will be offered every 30 minutes on the hour and half hour, with the first program beginning at 9 a.m. and the last tour beginning at 4:30 p.m. The first floor has a self-guided museum and video that are available anytime during open hours. The Russian Bishop House is now fee free.
Park trails are open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Cyclists are reminded that bicycles must be walked on park trails. A bicycle rack is provided at the visitor center for those wishing to explore the rest of the park on foot. Visitors are also welcome to walk dogs on park trails, but must keep their pets on a leash at all times and dispose of pet waste properly.

Quilt Guild to Meet
Ocean Wave Quilt Guild will hold its monthly meeting at Grace Harbor Church across from SeaMart at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 2. Officers for the coming year will be elected.
The guild meets the first Tuesday of the month, September through May for inspiration, friendship, creativity and support. Meetings are open to anyone and membership is not required.

‘Days for Girls’
A Sewing Day for “Days for Girls” will be held 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at United Methodist Church.
The day is part of a mission project that makes and provides washable and reusable feminine hygiene supplies so that there can be more school “Days for Girls” in undeveloped countries.
“We’ll need help with sewing but also with pressing and other non-skilled tasks,” an organizer said. “Bring your sewing machine or just your willingness to help and come any time 10 to 4 on Saturday to the United Methodist Church, 303 Kimsham, 747-8775.”

Triathlon May 20
Registration is now open for the Julie Hughes Triathlon, scheduled 9 a.m. May 20, at Blatchley Middle School.
The event consists of a 5-mile run, 12-mile bike ride and 1,000-yard swim. A special short course for the 12 and under participants also will be held.
Athletes can compete individually or on a team. Early registration is $35 per racer ages 18 and over, $15 for 17 and under. T-shirts are guaranteed for those registering before May 5.
Helmets are required and all cyclists are being encouraged to have a bike safety check at Yellow Jersey.
The Baranof Barracuda Swim club hosts the triathlon, now in its 33rd year, in memory of Julie Hughes, who died of cancer at age 15, in 1985. Proceeds from the event are donated to the Sitka Cancer Survivor Society.

Children Invited
To Move at Park
Youths and their families are invited to participate in a movement-based program at Sitka National Historical Park 3 p.m. Sunday, April 30. Movement Inspired by Nature is a free, 30-minute program for preschool – early elementary aged kids to use their imaginations to explore various movements and poses that mimic the natural world. The program will be held outside the park’s Visitor Center if the weather is favorable, in the theater if not.
Children must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the program. For more information call the park Visitor Center at 747-0110.
Preschoolers Get
Storytime at Park
Parents and tots are to join park rangers for a story about camping during May’s Preschool Storytime at Sitka National Historical Park, 10 a.m. Monday, May 1 at the Visitor Center.
Children will hear a story, sing songs and create a camping themed postcard. A parent or guardian must be with each child during all the 30-minute program.
