BIG RIGS – Max Bennett, 2, checks out the steering on a steamroller during the 3 to 5 Preschool’s Big Rig fundraiser in front of Mt. Edgecumbe High School Saturday. Hundreds of kids and parents braved the wet weather to check out the assortment of machines, including road building trucks, a U.S. Coast Guard ANT boat, police cars and fire department rigs. Kids were able to ride as passengers on ATVs. (Sentinel Photo by James Poulson)

‘Songbird Migration’

Presentation Tonight

Tonight’s Natural History seminar will feature biologist Allison Nelson presenting “Solving the Mystery of Songbird Migration” at 7:30 p.m. in UAS-Sitka Campus Room 229.

The identification of a migratory species’ whereabouts throughout the year is essential to developing effective management plans and conservation programs for migratory birds, organizers said.

Nelson will discuss her work focusing on the migration patterns of the hermit thrush, one of North America’s most celebrated songbirds. She will tell about her research that has used geolocation devices to track this species’ overlapping migration patterns, from Southeast Alaska to the San Francisco Bay Area to Baja, Mexico. She’ll also present current research using genetics to create maps of the hermit thrush’s breeding locations.

The seminar series is supported by a grant from the Sitka Alaska Permanent Charitable Trust to the Sitka Sound Science Center and by University of Alaska Southeast, the National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service.

Youths Catch

Derby Attention

A tradition continues as the 62nd annual Sitka Salmon Derby gets families casting off for fun times on the water.

Sitka Sportsman’s Association urges parents and grandparents to provide safe recreation on their boats while they teach angling skills and good sportsmanship to youths under age 16 who can fish without an Alaska license.

Numerous sponsors have designated prizes this year for those kids, including trophies by Mike White for young entrants of the three largest kings. Other prize donors include Harris Air Services, Arrowhead Transfer, True Value, Sitka Bottling Company, Southeast Automotive and Maintenance, and Sitka Realty.

For more information, contact Derby Chairman John McCrehin at 738-8636 or prize coordinator Elaine Strelow, 747-3469.

 Geocaching

Hike on Tap

Sitka Trail Works’ volunteer board members will lead a weekend public hike 8:30 a.m. May 20. First aid supplies, VHF radios and touring poles are provided.

‘‘Intro to Geocaching’’ will meet at the Sitka High School entrance to the Cross Trail for a short introduction to Geocaching. Hikers will learn about discovering hidden caches while exploring, and take an easy 1- to 2-mile hike on the Cross Trail.

Participants/parents and guardians should take a smart phone with a downloaded geocache app to participate. Also, kids should take a trinket or two in exchange for a “treasure” they may discover in the cache. Hike length will depend on the interest level of the group. Water bottles are to be taken.

More information and trail descriptions are available at www.sitkatrailworks.org or by calling 747-7244.

April 2004

Responding to the requests of athletes, coaches and parents, the Sitka School Board voted unanimously Monday against a proposal that would have changed Sitka High School’s classification from Class 4A, which includes Juneau and Ketchikan, to the 3A, which has schools with enrollment of 100 to 400 students.

April 1974

Memories of Sitka’s first radio station have been revived by a St. Louis, Mo., man who was one of the founders. Fred A. Wiethuchter recently wrote a letter to “Mayor Sitka, Alaska” asking about the town since he was here during World War II. He was an Army private at Fort Ray when he was attached to Armed Services Radio Station KRAY and WVCX ....
