Cable Repaired, Phone, Internet Service Back
By SHANNON HAUGLAND

Internet, cable and telephone services in Sitka and other Southeast communities were mostly restored by late Thursday following a day in which they had been crippled or shut down by a damaged fiber optic cable on Douglas Island.
The damaged cable took out landline telephone service, slowed or eliminated internet connections, and affected cable TV, GCI said.
GCI Director of Corporate Communications Heather Handyside said the company responded by rerouting communications onto a satellite, bringing back the top priority services first, with cable TV the last to be back.
Teams pinpointed the area of the break around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, and by 7:20 p.m. the line had been repaired, with services being moved back from the satellite to the cable. By 10 p.m. most services were “back and fairly operational,” Handyside said.
She said the company worked hard to respond to the outage.
“I think the response varies from situation to situation, working from a technical perspective in Anchorage, and crews on the ground in Southeast,” Handyside said. “The overall response was strong. When something breaks, we put all our resources to restoring it ... We are always keenly aware of how important service is.”
